The international auction house RM Sotheby's continues its online sales with in August Shift/Monterey from the 14th to the 15th. The star of this sale is likely to be this 1960 Porsche 356 RSR Outlaw customized from the California tean of Emory Motorsports with the help of the Italian sport cars specialist MOMO.

History of Porsche 356

Although this example has nothing to do with an original Porsche 356, it's always good to go back to the origins to fully appreciate the work done by Emory Motorsports.

The Porsche 356 was introduced in 1948 with aluminium body powered by VW engine D delivering 46 hp. In 1956, it was replaced by the heavily modified 356 A thanks to Technical Program 1 or T1 with five different four-cylinder engines :
🚗 356 to 1300 - 44 hp,
🚗 356 A 1300 Super - 60 hp,
🚗 356 1600 - 60 hp,
🚗 356 A 1600 Super - 75 hp,
🚗 356 A 1500 GS Carrera - 100 hp.

During the 1959 Frankfurt Auto Show, the 356 B was presented with a new set of upgrades (style & technics) aka T5 body type. This customized version was built on the T5 frame. In 1962, the body was again changed (T6). And finally, in 1964, the Type C was introduced with a more powerful engine.

End of the official story and welcome to the world of the outlaws. The Outlaw movement began in California several decades ago by Porsche's passionnate like Gary Emory to restore and customize old models essential the 356. His son, Rod Emory, founded Los Angeles–based Emory Motorsports to produce this stunning customizations like this one.

Last year, another outlaw model done by Emory Motorsports, but based on a 356A, was sold for $US 500,000 by Bring a Trailer. A simpler design, closer to the original but beautiful too :

Specification

This Porsche 356 RSR took about 4 years of work to Emory Motorsports to completely transform a decaying 1960 Porsche 356B T5 chassis. The T5 chassis was lengthened by 85 mm to accommodate parts of a 1990 Porsche 964 C2 chassis. Not an easy task...

Thanks to this transformation, the power increased from 200 hp to 393 hp with a weight of less than 900 kg. Impressive power/weight ratio. The engine is a 2.4 litre flat-four twin-turbocharged derived from the 3.6 flat-six that equipped the 964 and 993. It's mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

With this color Meteorite Mate, the design is even more menacing, perfect for Batman. The bodywork is made of aluminium panels completed with 17 inch MOMO Heritage wheels.

The interior is also beautiful with MOMO seats, wooden shift knob...
