Silence - Meditation - Recipe - Yoga

As I mentioned in my previous post, I am currently taking a Silence Course offered by The Art of Living, an international yoga organization.

Here is the link to the first post in this "Silent Yogic Saga" 🤫:

Day II

Today, the day began early. By 6:30 AM, I was already up and practicing yoga. I’m not usually the type to jump straight into activity upon waking; I need time to stretch and truly feel ready to move. But today, I didn't have a choice.

Morning Yoga

It was intense—perhaps a bit too much for such an early hour, at least for me. Still, I managed to get through it, gradually waking up with each pose.

We practiced a meditation, followed by Sudarshan Kriya and Bhastrika.

Sudarshan Kriya: This is the core rhythmic breathing technique of The Art of Living, designed to release deep-seated stress at a cellular level, fostering profound inner peace and mental clarity.

Bhastrika: A rapid, energetic breathing technique (resembling a "bellows"), where you raise both arms and then let them drop to your sides while exhaling forcefully. This type of breathing intensely oxygenates the blood, boosts metabolism, and warms the body in preparation.

All of this took place while I sipped an infusion of ginger, turmeric, black pepper, and mango leaves.

Since I cannot drink coffee or mate—as they affect my system—I prepared this "golden blend" for myself.

An hour-and-a-half break—Breakfast and Lunch Preparation

I took advantage of this time to prepare my lunch. Since we are eating vegetarian these days, I made a mixture to prepare cassava patties. You can find the video with the recipe below.

9:40 AM
Meditation: What would it be like if you only had one week left to live on Earth?

What does it mean to be in silence? (Video by Gurudev)

During these three days, you have no obligations toward anyone; there is no need to greet others, say "good morning," or speak to anyone at all. There is also no need to fill your time with tasks. Simply be—just exist. Nothing more. There is nothing to do, nothing to resolve, nothing to think about, and nowhere you need to get to. Allow thoughts and emotions to arise, but let them go.

Meditations with mudras and Ujjayi breathing—to increase prana (vital energy).

Mudras: These are gestures made with the hands and fingers that act as "energy seals," channeling the body’s energy and facilitating concentration during meditation.

  • Chin Mudra (heart area)
  • Chinmaya Mudra (between the eyebrows)
  • Adi Mudra (brain)
  • Merudanda Mudra (spine)

Mudras

Ujjayi Breathing: A gentle form of nasal breathing where the throat is slightly constricted, creating a sound similar to the ocean. It is ideal for calming the nervous system and focusing the mind.

10:30 AM The power came back on—Hallelujah!!!

A guided meditation by Gurudev (via recording). Breathing with eyes closed. It was very relaxing, even though the power flickered and cut out two or three times—a common occurrence here in Cuba when electricity returns after a long blackout. I suppose it’s our way of learning patience—a valuable lesson for courses like this, and for life in general.

That said, even while trying to be patient, I couldn't help but think: "This damn power..."

But after three breaths, I returned to a state of calm. We continue our meditation with deep breathing exercises, guided by Gurudev. He says that breathing is the first and last act of life on Earth.

With each inhalation, every cell in the body is energized by Prana, and with each exhalation, the body relaxes.

Midway through the meditation:
Alternate Nostril Breathing
(Nadi Shodhana):

This is a technique that involves inhaling and exhaling while alternately closing one nostril and then the other. It helps to balance the brain's hemispheres, calm the nervous system, and prepare the mind for meditation.

Continuing with the breath-based meditation.

We concluded the deep meditation sessions at 12:30.

ONE-AND-A-HALF-HOUR LUNCH BREAK

For lunch, we prepared a special recipe for the occasion. Here is the link to the video: Cassava Cake (Torta de Yuca)**

@havandris/receta-vegetariana-torta-de-293

The afternoon session consisted of one meditation after another, along with more breathing exercises—plus a brief period of yoga practice.

...for 10 minutes. All together via Zoom.

Meal break
The meal was also vegetarian—beans and avocado.

We returned at 7:30 PM to meditate and watch a video by Gurudev about spiritual wealth.

*The 4 Spiritual Treasures (Sadhana Chatushtaya):
These are the essential pillars of self-discipline and inner maturity in Vedanta.
*Viveka: Discernment between the real and the ephemeral.
Vairagya: Detachment from transient pleasures.
Shatsampatti: The 6 mental virtues (which include Shama, or mental control, and Dama, or control of the senses).
*Mumukshutva: An intense longing for liberation and spiritual peace.

We finished at 8:15 PM.

This day in the Silence Course taught me that true silence means letting go of haste and simply being. Between the deep breathing (Sudarshan Kriya), yoga postures, mudras, and the patience tested by power outages, I reaffirmed that the mind finds balance when we release control and focus our energy on the present moment. I must add, however, that given the sheer volume of information, I have found a great deal of silence and peace simply sitting alone in my garden, observing my plants. I suspect this course is designed more as a tool for the future than for the immediate experience of silence itself. Time will tell.

For my part, I have remained in total silence.

See you tomorrow!!!
I look forward to having you join me for the third day of this silent yogic saga. _______

@havandris/receta-vegetariana-torta-de-293

9:40 AM

  • Chinmaya Mudra (entresejo)
  • Adi Mudra (cerebro)
  • Merudanda Mudra (columna vertebral)

Mudras

@havandris/receta-vegetariana-torta-de-293
