Hi, today I think I unlocked an achievement!
My eldest son's long pants for his school uniform is too loose for his waist and I have been thinking what I should do with it. It is a bit weird because when we tried him on, it fitted him well. We tried to put a belt for him but he said it was difficult to put back after he had gone toilet so he kept it in his bag and came home with him holding his pants! Another day, I hooked a safety pin to let him buckle the safety pin instead of the usual buckle and it went missing, he too came home the next day holding his pants hahahha!
My sister-in-law @iamjadeline and another friend who are experienced mothers of schooling children taught me a hack with elastic band which I could not brain until I watched this video on
YOUTUBE on how to take in the waist of your jeans, no-sew easy and quick .
So I decided....
Let's DIY and try it!
Not a tailor and neither have I learnt sewing or tailoring but...
Here goes!!
**Materials and tools required: **
馃馃УElastic band
馃馃УNeedle
馃馃УThread
馃馃УButtons
馃馃УA safety pin
A hiccup
I realised the pants cannot insert the elastic band all the way like what is shown in the youtube tutorial video in the above link as you can see there is a dead sewn end here where there was already an elastic band in it. So I got to improvise.
Think, think, think..... 馃馃馃
I think I can do two shorter bands on each side instead just like my baby's pants.
Firstly, cut a small hole on the inside layer of the pants and then another hole on the other end. Be careful not to cut the outside layer at all.
Next, pin the safety pin onto the elastic band of a suitbale length and feel the safety pin to guide the elastic band through till it comes out on the other end.
After that, sew one button on each end. Make sure they are sewn on tight.
Button up in your preferred length to tighten up the waist as much as you need.
Okay, one side done!
For the other side, I tried to sew the button first as there is a buckle on this side and I wanted to make sure the elastic bands will not interfere with the buckle so my son will still be able to buckle his pants like usual.
Upin sewing the buttons on each side, now I cut a hole near each button to create an opening for another elastic band.
Again, I pinned the safety pin onto the band and felt it as I used it to guide the band throught the hole to reach another open hole.
Voila, I did it!!!!!
Now his long pants is now having the same waist measurement as his shorts which fits him just nice!!!
It was this big difference with the front pants as his fitting size and back pants as the one being too loose.
Before
After
Hence, that was my first humble #needlework post, which hopefully my explanation did not confuse you! Hehehe!
I am feeling as if I am on top of the world now because it just brings so much sense of achievement to a sewing noob like me! That wasn't too bad, right? And I saved on going to the tailor. 馃ぃ
After gaining a bit of confidence in this successful #hivediy project, I think I can alter my own oversized skirt soon one day, woohoo!
