Clark Kent was so in love with Lana Lang (the girl next door as she was commonly known) that when she left Smallville he was emotionally devastated. Lana was Clark's crush and girlfriend and he would know nobody else until Lois Lane entered the scene.
Clark's separation from Lana gave him an emotional death experience, the kind we would call a "heart break" leaving a vacuum he believed no one would fill.
However, when Lois Lane appeared, she was no ordinary replacement and Clark Kent the would be Superman, would come to realize that Lois wasn't meant to fill Lana's shoes but rather fulfill her role as his ultimate woman under a new relationship established upon better promises.
"But now Jesus, our High Priest, has been given a ministry that is far superior to the old priesthood, for he is the one who mediates for us a far better covenant with God, based on better promises. If the first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no need for a second covenant to replace it."-Hebrews 8:6-7 NLT
On realizing this Clark Kent thus concludes with the following remark; "when you hold on to the past you become afraid of the future, and you miss the present standing right in front of you".
