The homestead is as busy as a bumbling bee. Always changing, growing, and carrying forward.
I’m learning a plethora of new skills and information as I crank through this summer. June was a wet month, so the grass has grown like crazy. I didn’t realize that the grass fields I have need to be dealt with, so I just let them grow untamed and uncontrolled, lol. Well, the grass is as tall as me in some parts, and I’m 5’4”. I truly did not realize that grass grew to be five feet tall. Did you? Irrigation begins soon, so I need to get the grass CUT.
Maybe you’re thinking: “Gubba, just get a lawn mower” A normal lawn mower, even a riding one, won’t take care of the grass situation I have on my hands. I either have to pay a professional mower (yes, there are professional field mowers) or I need to invest in equipment which is thousands of dollars—yikes!
I could potentially use the tall grass to make hay then sell for a killing, but that comes with an initial investment of buying EXPENSIVE equipment. Have you ever seen how much a tractor goes for? A bailer? Hot dang! Maybe I’ll just take my push mower out there and go to town.
One of my neighbors offered to give me a crash course in irrigation, but I have to get part of my field mowed by the fourth of July. Uhmmmm, I have realized that all of the professional mowers are pretty much all booked up and I don’t think I can swing the equipment and learn how to do it in a week. One of the professional mowers said they can probably get to me and will try their best, but it isn’t guaranteed. This was even AFTER I offered to pay them extra LOL. Who knew professional field mowers were such a hot commodity?
So now, I wait and see if I can get it done. I don’t know what a course in irrigation will look like if I don’t. Another person from my church offered to come out but the only time they could come was during my neighborhood BBQ that has been planned for the past month at my house. UGH. I about died inside. I was half tempted to bail on the BBQ because I need grass cut. First, I told a friend this week I can’t go to Disneyland because I have a cow I have to milk and then today would have been “sorry, I can’t do the BBQ because I need to cut my grass.”
Farmer excuses are next level. Here’s to hoping I get my grass cut in the next week, but in the meantime, it’s edge of waving grass gives me a beautiful horizon view and some privacy from neighbors.
