Is Keeping Dekalb Brown Chickens Worth It for a Small Backyard Homestead?

Yesterday morning, I checked our chickens if they already laid some eggs.
Right now, we have 4 hens and 1 rooster.
Since our space is just limited, my hubby and I thought to raise a chicken that is useful... Like the ones that provide eggs for our family.
When I checked the chicken nest (it's the covered spot where they usually lay their eggs...), I was surprised coz one of the hens is already sitting there. Haha
I thought I scared her, but still she's doing her job. 😍
These Dekalb Browns are my hubby's choice. He's already raising native chickens before... But because of his work, he gave them to his mom. And it's becoming productive now. 🥰
So because he wanted some chicken again, we decided to buy Dekalb Brown. This breed is known for being productive in laying brown eggs. So, that makes us dream of selling some eggs too.
Yesterday, I got 2 eggs, out of 3 hens. One hen didn't lay her egg, but that's fine. It's totally normal. For sure, she'll catch up today. 🫶🏻
For us, having a daily supply of eggs rather than buying it regularly is much better. Spending money on their feed is much cheaper.
But of course, you need some effort. Taking care of chickens means you always have to have clean water, enough food, keeping the place clean, and of course paying attention to their needs. It takes time but it's all worth it.
My hubby is the one doing it actually, hahaha. He's the caretaker of the chickens in our little homestead.
For one of our hens... She went broody, which was unusual for her. One day she started sitting on the eggs, but stopped laying or producing eggs.
Even now that her chicks are out, she still isn't producing eggs. She's focusing on her chicks.
So in my conclusion... Keeping Dekalb Browns is worth it for a small homestead.
Yes. Especially if your main goal is egg production.
But remember... There are expenses and daily chores involved too.
So if you can manage everything... Start with a few productive hens and it will become so useful in your little homestead.
