When the socioeconomic crisis worsened in Venezuela, a historic diaspora began in this country that divided many families, many left the homeland where they were born to go in search of a better quality of life. My family did not escape from that reality, my brothers, nephews, cousins, today are scattered in different countries: USA, Argentina, Chile, Spain, France. I always understood that everyone builds their own future, and that's fine, so I learned to live with those physical absences, keeping in touch through virtual messaging and social networks. During that time, of course, I was harshly questioned by family and friends for not making the decision to emigrate, although it is difficult to understand, I have had my reasons for not acting accordingly; however, I have never been denied to that possibility.
I have celebrated with true emotion the achievements of my siblings in this new stage, I am very pleased to know that they are now better off, that they enjoy real well-being, that as a result of their work and daily effort they have a decent quality of life. Sincerely, their happiness is mine. While everyone was building their own future, I was still here in Venezuela, in that eternal process of coping with reality, but justifying my inaction by the fact of being surrounded by my loved ones, mainly for having my mother on this side of the puddle, but precisely thinking of her and her welfare, two and a half years ago my brother decided that she should go to Spain, and enjoy the privileges of having the nationality of that country.
Initially, she was only going for a trimester to be reunited with my brother, and at the same time, to catch up with all the documentation that accredits her as a Spanish citizen, but being there, my brothers and I considered that, given the conditions in Venezuela, especially in the area of health and social security, it was best for her to stay there since the benefits granted to her in that country guarantee her a better quality of life. And that has been the case since then. Knowing that she is well, gives me peace, reassures me, I know that she is better off there... however, we had never been separated for so long, we are a very close family, and the lack of physical contact, hugs, meeting, sharing, has begun to make us miss each other. On the one hand, it has awakened her interest in wanting to return; on the other hand, it has made me aware that it is time to consider what is really right for me, my husband, and my children.
For some people, packing a suitcase, buying a ticket and leaving may be an easy decision; I must admit that it is not for me, honestly it is a decision that involves a lot in my life, not only for the fact of having to start from scratch, it is not that, it is to abandon overnight what we have worked so hard to build, it is to feel anger, helplessness, and indignation for having to leave everything aside due to circumstances that I never propitiated. Perhaps some may think that I focus exclusively on the material, and they are nowhere near the truth, it is not the material that I value, it is the effort and sacrifice behind it. Those who have had everything served on the table, may not understand; I do not come from a wealthy family, on the contrary, I come from a humble family, where much or little is built block by block, shoulder by shoulder...working, which certainly fills me with pride and satisfaction.
**But think of your children," is the most recurrent phrase that anyone deliberately mentions, as if as a mother I don't do it every day. I am fully aware that they, my children, deserve a better future, one where there are real opportunities, where their basic needs are met, where they grow up safe. Of course, I do not want them to get used to living based on shortages, I do not try at all that in their minds the improper is standardized as correct or the abnormal as normal, because that should not be. For them precisely, for their future, both my husband and I are willing to give up everything, but that does not mean that it is a choice that is taken in the heat of circumstances, or worse, of emotions.
Many times I have been rebuked saying: " but so-and-so, who had nothing, left", or they say, " so-and-so, didn't even think about it and left". And yes, I can understand that it must be easier to decide to leave everything when you have nothing to lose when you just have to get up and continue. It is also true that many people who decided not to think about it enough, later came back prey to frustration, perhaps precisely because they made decisions a priori without considering the pros and cons. The truth is that all cases are different, in particular, it bothers me a lot to compare some realities with others because simply there are different from each other.
Since my mom is in Spain I question almost daily if I am right to stay here, I feel an immense need to be reunited with them because they are my loved ones, I know they want the best for us. I have not discarded at any time the possibility of trying to put 40 years in a suitcase and take that flight, maybe I will do it much sooner than some people think, maybe I will do it at least as an exercise to see if I get used to the idea, or maybe it will just be a vacation with a return ticket. In any case, it will be when we decide, we will not give in to social pressure, it will be at the right moment and time, at our own pace...it is our future, our destiny, and we will build it according to our conditions, realities, and expectations.
Before you draw your own conclusions and think: "what an asshole, being Spanish and she hasn't left", I'm sure you thought it, I wouldn't be surprised, everyone does it; well no, I'm not Spanish, I'm Venezuelan, and I'm happy to be so in spite of the difficulties. That, among so many other things, is part of those "realities" that everyone has in a particular way, you see?
Believe me, I am completely aware of the current reality that the country is going through, I do not refuse to recognize the enormous shortages that we suffer, I am not stupid, I know what is best for us, but I will not rush decisions, this is a process, and I will try to make it as less traumatic as possible for me and my family. I fully trust that God's timing is perfect, he will know how to guide our steps in the right direction, at the right time...not before, not after.
