One of the advantages of living in the Czech Republic is that you can always end your trip in a microbrewery. Some of them were founded centuries ago (and renewed recently), and others are just a few decades or even years old. Yet most of them brew fantastic beer for a bargain. The brewery in Ladronka Homestead belongs among the brand new ones, although Ladronka's history stretches for almost a millennium. The homestead was founded by our most famous king, the only one who became the Holy Roman Emperor – Charles IV. Yep, the very same Charles IV who established the oldest university in Central Europe (Charles University in Prague) and one of the most popular Prague landmarks, Charles Bridge.
Apart from being a great statesman, a honey-tongued diplomat, and arguably quite a successful romance scammer (he got married four times, making a profit on every single of his marriages), Charles IV also had a huge fondness for wine. Rumour has it that he became a cork dork while spending his youth studying at the French royal court and a bit later when he governed Lombardy in Italy. Incidentally, as a teenager – the Czechs apparently fall for alcohol at a very early age. Anyways, when Charles IV finally returned to Prague to take up his rightful rule over the Bohemian kingdom, there were no vineyards at all. Well, where there's a will, there's a way, especially when you are an absolute monarch. "Let there be grapes!" His Majesty ordered. And there were. Not that instant, obviously, but he eventually got his subjects to grow grapevine further north than was common in his days.
Jednou z výhod života v Česku je, že na konci každého výletu můžete skončit v minipivovaru. Některé z nich mají mnohasetletou historii a nedávno byly obnoveny, jiné jsou jen pár let staré. Ale skoro všechny vaří skvělá piva za pár korun. Pivovar v Usedlosti Ladronka patří k těm novým, i když samotná Ladronka má za sebou bezmála tisíciletou historii. Usedlost založil sám král český a císař Svaté říše římské, Karel IV. Otec vlasti.
Krom toho, že byl úspěšným státníkem a protřelým diplomatem by z něj byl i skvělý sňatkový podvodník - ženil se hned čtyřikrát a pokaždé na tom alespoň trochu vydělal. A měl i slabost pro víno. Prý se pro něj nadchl na francouzském královském dvoře, kde se napůl ve vyhnanství vzdělával, a jako teenager v italské Lombardii, kterou spravoval. Ano, my Češi asi podléháme alkoholu už v mládí. Když se Karel vrátil do Prahy, aby převzal své království, k jeho zklamání tu nebyly žádné vinice. Ale kde je vůle, tam je cesta. Zejména jste-li absolutistický monarcha. "Budiž hrozny!" zavelelo Jeho Veličenstvo. A byly. Ne tak rychle, samozřejmě, ale král nakonec své poddané přiměl k tomu, aby pěstovali vinnou révu podstatně severněji, než bylo v jeho době obvyklé.
Ladronka is basically a grape seed spitting distance from Prague Castle, and yet you won’t run into many tourists here. If there are any in the area, they would likely head to the nearby Břevnov Monastery (with another great microbrewery). There’s no vineyard either, it’s been turned into a park, which is popular among sporty Praguers for its long in-line trail, disc golf course, and, most notably, Ladronka homestand. It offers beach volleyball courts, a trampoline center, and a bowling alley (in the old stables). The place is also known for its restaurant and microbrewery, which is actually the keen part of my post.
Ladronka je co by hroznem vína dohodil z Pražského hradu, ale mnoho turistů sem nezabloudí. Když už tímhle směrem některý zamíří, většinou Ladronku mine a skončí v nedalekém Břevnovském klášteře (kde je taky super minipivovar). Není tu už ani vinice, změnila se na park, který je populární hlavně mezi sportujícími Pražany. Je tu dlouhý in-line okruh, discgolfové hřiště, a samotná Ladronka nabízí beachvolejbalová hřiště, trampolínové centrum a bowling (v bývalých stájích). Krom toho je tu vyhlášená restaurace a minipivovar, který je tou nejdůležitější částí mého postu.
I am not gonna lie; I came for the beer. I hope Charles IV would have some sympathy for such blasphemy in the middle of his dominion. Ladronka restaurant is one of the few places that overcome covid lockdowns well, thanks to various delivery services, and I still order from time to time, mainly because of Heyl, the local APA. Heyl is a bit smoother and less alcoholic (4.3% abv) than a typical beer of this style, but I still like it a lot. You can feel well-balanced bitterness and fruitiness in its body, followed by a fresh fruity aftertaste.
Nebudu lhát, přišel jsem kvůli pivu. Snad by měl Karel IV. pro takové rouhání alespoň trochu pochopení. Restaurace Ladronka je jedním z podniků, které přečkaly covidové lockdowny celkem v pohodě. Hlavně díky rozvozu. A čas od času si od nich jídlo objednám i dneska, hlavně kvůli místnímu pivu. Jmenuje se Heyl a je to skvěle pitelná APA. Oproti jiným APÁm je Heyl trochu méně alkoholický (4,3 % vol.), ale to mi vůbec nevadí. Je to vyvážené pivo s hořko-ovocným tělem a jemným svěže ovocným dozvukem.
Beránek (the Lamb) is a semi-dark Bohemian lager. At first, the dark malt kicks in with the typical sweetness and chocolate tones of dark lagers. The body is bittersweet with an emerging hoppy taste, while the aftertaste reminds you of dark lagers again. I believe that this beer’s taste depends on the batch a lot as I remember it quite differently. It felt a bit plainer this time.
Beránek je polotmavý český ležák. Na první doušek ucítíte tmavý slad a jeho typické nasládlé až čokoládové tóny. Tělo je hořkosladké s postupující chmelovou hořkostí. A dozvuk vám znovu připomene tmavé ležáky. Přijde mi, že chuť tohohle piva hodně záleží na várce, protože si ho pamatuju jiné. Tentokrát chutnalo trochu ploše.
I almost missed the most special beer, though. It was neither on tap nor from Ladronka microbrewery. I run into Christmas Yule, a red Saaz ale with honey and homemade gingerbread from a nomad brewery Panaczech, by chance when I went to take pictures of the bowling alley. It would have been a sin to pass this up, so I bought a bottle to take home. I must admit I was very pleasantly surprised. The honey and gingerbread were immanent but certainly not disturbing. It did taste like Czech Christmas with our typical candies called "cukroví". It is hard to describe it to anybody who has never tasted any. I can’t imagine drinking this beer in summer, but it really suits the winter season.
A málem mi utekla ta největší pivní specialita. Nebyla ani na čepu, ani z Ladronky. Na pivo Christmas Yule, red Saaz ale s medem a domácím perníkem z létajícího pivovaru Panaczech, jsem narazil náhodou, když jsem šel fotit bowling do bývalých stájí. A byl by to hřích, nevzít si jednu láhev domů. Musím říct, že jsem byl velmi příjemně překvapen. Med a perník byly v pivu cítit, ale rozhodně ne nijak rušivě. Pivo chutnalo jako české vánoce, evokovalo ve mě cukroví. Neumím si představit, že bych ho pil v létě, ale k zimě se tohle pivo skvěle hodí.
