Yo estaba frenético, estaba eufórico, anhelante y me sentía pesado.

Arodia, había encontrado mi sufrimiento apetitoso y conveniente.

No sabía qué decirle.

No podía mentirme a mí mismo.

Y me dolió, profundamente.

“Me has esperado casi mil años.

¿Te has lastimado?

The infernal kiss

Hatred moved me. I couldn't think rationally, I was driven by a force bigger than me, bigger than her. The pact was cracking and I was desperate, furious, hurt and cursed. Trusting that spectral woman had been my mistake, but it had also given me hope. It had been gambling on chance. I was dead, but I could feel the physical pain in my bones, unable to bear the weight of abrupt loss.

I felt it so strong that I almost fell to the ground, each time it became more and more powerful. That rumbling of which my chest was the epicenter. It was selfish but I felt some relief every time the news reached me, it was a honey-sweet agony mixed with a powerful ginger that made my throat sting. Despite being dead for so long I still remembered the taste of it, my words still had coherence.

Down here where the lava runs and the screams are heard in the distance, down here after so many centuries, I still managed to remember his voice, but subtle as a fragile petal before the fire. I had the advantage of going to fragments of my memory where she danced agitated and happy. Her hair was flying and her smile invited me to admire her. That was almost a millennium ago.

Her heart had stopped beating, again. I was frantic, I was elated, I was longing, and I felt heavy. How could I be glad that her life was over? Was it even fair? Was it even coherent? But the truth was that I had missed her so much that every second burned. Receiving the impulse from my chest with her name in every engraved fiber that disturbed my inner peace was a blessing.

It was absurd to deny it. I was happy to see her again, to have her with me, in my arms and finally provide her with the choice I had had to wait so long to offer. The millennium had been fulfilled and my contract would at last be rewarded with the unique desire granted to wretches like me. One drop of blood had been enough, for I had lost everything then. But it was nowhere near all that came later.

She had died long ago, when my bones could snap, when my skin could be ripped off and my blood would quickly gush from my frail body. I had been devastated, my world collapsing in layer upon layer, sunk in a throbbing burning that exhausted me. Losing it was agonizing and overwhelming for me. Any proposal was good when you lose everything, the sound in your ears is devoured by a void as if you were at the top of Mount Everest, in your chest you feel the tons of a modern building crushing your vitality and tears arise without being stopped, because for them it is illogical not to find freedom among so much suffering.

I will never forget that night when her claw stretched out before me with a warm sweetness that tucked in everything I lacked at that moment, humanity. Amara, my beloved, had died in a train wreck on her way to see her sister. If she hadn't, we would have married and raised the daughter she was carrying in her womb at just a few months gestation. My agony was immense and my footsteps had found their way to the highest bridge to fly, in search of her faded smile. But the universe had other capricious plans.

Arodia, had found my suffering appetizing and convenient. She was convinced that I would accept the deal that had been going from miserable to miserable since the beginning of time. And she was right in believing it. I had thrown myself off the bridge, but by some ironic construction of creation, with my bones and soul broken, bleeding internally and half-conscious, she came to me.

Like a divine, yet icy apparition, she bowed before me and stopped time as she began to whisper in my ears about reunions, love and a wish granted by the sister of the king of hell. Quite obviously, it was the word reunion that captured my attention. If I did the work the deal required, I could see Amara and love her by my side if she agreed to it. So what happened next was a string of consequences that I later agreed to endure.

When I accepted and gave my loyalty to Arodia, she stopped stopping time and all the pain of the moment of my suicide attempt thawed, giving way to the inevitable. Closing my eyes as the blood in my punctured lungs prevented me from breathing, I thought it had all been just a hallucination and in such a case, what I wanted was to be with the woman I loved again, so the last thing I felt was relief.

But as I opened them again, it dawned on me. A bucket of ice water over me would have had less impact than I realized at that moment. I had become part of the invisible court of hell, Abalam. Of course, being mentally notified of the death of most humans soon became a tormenting burden. But through the second century, morals began to dwindle and of me only traces remained of the human I had been.

To worldly belief, I was a kind of grim reaper. I would pick up, if I wanted to, some humans at the moment of their death. If I was bored and wanted to skip the hassle, I would send the legion I now had under my command. It was only strictly necessary when there was a massive death of human beings, that day I could not miss work.

By the third century, I had lost track of why I had made the deal with Arodia. Humanity seemed excessively vulgar and greedy to me, I was disgusted and honestly unaffected by any of their deaths. Until one managed to tense my whole body without a hint of mercy. For the first time in three centuries since I had become a supernatural entity, I felt fear and shock. Not knowing for sure where I was going, I disappeared in the blink of an eye from hell to reappear in a lonely, cold house. On the bed in the master bedroom lay a motionless body, it had stopped breathing seconds before.

Amara's first reincarnation had come to a natural end. Her hair was white, she had a waist-length blanket over her. She had aged, but behind the wrinkles of cruel years, her essence attracted me like a magnet. In an instant, next to me she materialized in that particular way that souls have. She looked at her own body on the bed and sighed resignedly. From my appearance I thought she would be frightened, but instead she looked at me curiously. I had been speechless watching her eyes, it really was her.

After a couple of seconds, enveloped in a faint grayish smoke, my second in command appeared, I was coming to escort her. I had been worried for a moment, but in reality even though I was notified of every single death, not all of them went to hell. Sometimes, we just escorted them to the opposite road where their souls would fade away in peace. My second in command was shocked to see me in the same place, she asked if there was any change with this soul and I just shook my head. They both left, but I had not been able to stop seeing Amara's reincarnation.

I was dead, I had been dead for centuries and yet I felt it was hard to breathe. The deal was that after a millennium and three reincarnations of Amara, if she committed a serious sin and her soul belonged to hell, I could reincarnate with her if she accepted it. This was only the first one and it was not until that moment that I understood that I had lost part of me in the time I was waiting for her.

Seeing her again, even if she couldn't recognize me, grounded me. If I continued to immorally darken my soul like the demon they wanted to transform me into, there would be nothing left of me by the time the only opportunity for which I had become a soul escort and leader of legions of fallen angels and demonic forces presented itself.

Carelessness was not the only thing that had permeated deep into my essence. By the seventh century, sarcasm and irony were with me like ice in a good glass of rum. An occasional visit from Arodia, inquiring about the wretch who kept her soul accounts, would take me out of the routine. She would tease me with a little pity. She knew perfectly well that despite my mask of annoyance and crudeness, inside I was still broken waiting for my service and Amara's two remaining deaths to end so I could become human again. A frail, weak and pathetic human that we used to mock with disdain.

On the day of my eighth century of service, I felt it again, this time it was so abrupt that I brought my hand to my chest. I transported myself with speed knowing what it meant. It had been an accident. She was in the driver's seat. A truck had dragged her car several feet after the impact, but because of that she managed to save a field trip of children inside a broken down bus. She was still young, an adult of at least 40 years old. Blood trickled down the side of her head, her body was squeezed between the seat and the steering wheel.

Again she appeared at my side contemplating what had happened, this time, she was extremely worried about the children. But she quickly checked that they had not been harmed by her intervention. The truck had no brakes and the hill had propelled it to unleash a catastrophe, only to be stopped by her action.

Talking without being heard or seen led her to understand that it was her inside the van. She had become a ghost of sorts. Insightful as always, she noticed that I was following her with my eyes. She connected the two dots and knew that if they couldn't see her, maybe they couldn't see me either, which meant I was no longer of this earthly world either. A little more than an arm's length away, she stood watching me curiously. I didn't know what to say to her. I certainly had mixed feelings, if a dead man can have any.

Before long my second in command arrived, her name was Nashira and again she was puzzled by my presence at the site where this particular soul had once again passed away. She understood that I had a connection with said soul, but discreet as always, she only asked if I could escort her without problems, and I only nodded. Amara, or whatever her name was in this life, alternated her gaze between Nashira and me biting her lower lip. I knew that gesture, she did it when she wanted to hold back a rash question or comment. She gave herself away easily, at least to me who had known her so well. Apparently reincarnations don't erase some habits.

As the two of them left together, I sighed heavily. How long would I have to wait to see her again? Was it cruel to look forward to seeing her again, even though I knew it would be when she passed away again? The time was approaching and it was inevitable that I would feel anxious. I could not lie to myself. In my head I heard Arodia's amused laughter telling me "selfish". Was I? I supposed so, since without me and the deal I made, Amara would not be able to reincarnate. It was just a clause to make my service possible and my desire to someday be able to be with her, to live long lives together as it should have been.

But I refused to call myself capricious. Time passed differently in hell, centuries quickly seemed like weeks. Once you got the hang of ignoring human concerns, the dead like me had no notion of time. To Arodia and the court, I was just another demon, but I still considered myself partly human, because to me I had not (most of the time) stopped being someone who died, a suicide for love. Besides, I had human desires. To live together with Amara again was a worldly desire. So after all, even if they perceived me differently, I had not yet lost my essence and my north.

Then the day came. Had I been alive it would have felt like a heart attack. It was the end of the ninth century of my service, my chest rumbled with malice. I dropped the crystal glass where I drank some kind of bitter liquor. I opened my eyes anxiously and disappeared in the blink of an eye. The trip brought me to a hospital room, she was in bed. Her long hair was falling over the side of her pillow and the doctors were screaming to get her back. She must have been at least 27 years old, the same age she was when she first left my side.

She materialized beside me like a ghost, as had happened before. She watched the scene sadly and I watched her. No one had noticed me because only the dead could see me, but when she looked at me she said, "I have seen you before"... She moved closer and extended her hand towards me, I raised mine to stop her, but I could not avoid the brush of our fingers. At that moment mortal time stopped, something I had only seen Arodia do. The scene in front of us came to a standstill and in it detonated the trunk I thought was impossible to open, the memories of all her past lives.

The rapid blinking, the trembling of her hands and her anguished face on the verge of panic confirmed to me that she knew for certain who she was. I soothed her with the name I knew and that brought familiarity. She asked in fright why my face looked this way, cadaverous, grim and ghostly. I tried to explain as much as I could, but the moment it all came out of my mouth, I realized that I had indeed been selfish. And it hurt, deeply. I had made a decision on my own that affected us both.

Arodia appeared shrouded in black smoke a couple of meters away and I felt angry, at myself and at her. I had ducked my head to avoid seeing Amara's contempt or disgust. Who was I to tie her to me like that? Perhaps her death had separated her from me for a good reason. But then, her delicate hand lifted my chin and her eyes glistened, they were tears. But there was no rancor or hatred in her gaze, she said, "I would have done the same."

I didn't need to breathe, but I felt as if my lungs were filling with air. She not only understood the decision I had made, but we shared the line of reasoning clinging to our snatched love. I embraced her without being able to stop myself, she sank into my arms with her face in my chest as she used to do. I held at that moment the only reason I had agreed to a deal with the sister of the king of hell. I could almost feel a faint throbbing of my extinct heart.

Arodia approached interrupting, not quite, the moment. I hadn't let my guard down as soon as she appeared, I had just decided to ignore her in a way. But then she did what she had to, she said, "She must make a decision, it can't be delayed any longer." Amara pulled slightly away from my body, as I frowned. When she looked at me, I sighed and explained the situation. It was still 50 years before my millennium, if she wished to die this instant I could not stop her. She would not be reborn once again and finally rest, I could not accompany her and I would be forever imprisoned in this infernal work. On the other hand, if she wished to wait for me, Arodia could make her heart beat again, returning her to her last reincarnation. Although she would not remember this encounter, for her it would be like having closed her eyes and opening them again.

"You've waited almost a thousand years for me, what's fifty for me?" was her reply. There was a lump in my throat and for a moment I almost didn't let her go, but time wasn't going to stand still forever. I had to let go and she smiled at me. She disappeared and time was restored. The scene continued and after a third attempt with the defibrillator, her heartbeat became audible on the monitor, she was alive. Arodia saw me with a sad smile and shaking her head, she left.

I had returned to hell, but I was extremely restless. Down there I lost track of time and there was so little time left that if I stayed long in that place I felt that she would slip through my fingers, like sand. So I decided to use the power I had never used before, that of possessing a mortal body. I just had to seduce or convince some human I was interested in and then make it mine. I had not gone to this before because it seemed cruel to humans. I felt sorry for them and I knew perfectly well why, as I had been one of them a long time ago. But I couldn't just sit still, so I approached.

Loui was a simple florist who lived in the same residential area as the current Amara, the one who had been discharged after her heart started beating again in the hospital after suffering a complication with her heart pathology. The florist and I had something in common, we had both loved and lost. The guy was broken inside and that made me bitterly remember my own story. Unlike the other Abalams who had preceded me, I was turning to possession out of necessity, not for fun.

The night Loui stayed late at his flower shop, a couple of miles from his home, I saw my opportunity. I went into the store, while he was doing the math. He kindly told me he was already closed but I could come back the next day. I ignored his words and like a gypsy I spoke to him of lost loves and bad fortune, as if I were a poet I described the pain that others could not understand; and like a salesman I made him an offer to vanish the emptiness that kept him awake at night. He let out a laugh, of course, subtle and even gentle. But he said in a low voice: "I am pleased to accept your proposal, but I doubt you can do anything with me".

Three nights later, I visited his room in the wee hours of the morning. I could not offer him the same as Arodia did to me, that was only a power of his. I could only let him rest and use his body as insurance, as a vessel. At first when I entered him it was strange and painful, I was inexperienced and clumsy moving his limbs. By the time his mind awoke, my voice in his head broke him and without much to do, he surrendered. He would not die until I left his body, but he remained muffled deep in a corner of unconsciousness, asleep.

I began to wander among banalities, just to see her, after I had completely mastered the handling of my vessel. Eventually I was not only a present neighbor, but also became a casual friend of Amara. I was like a fly in her window. I didn't want to scare her, so I gave her her space and she partly had a weakness for lonely people, so everything flowed the way it needed to. But in the evenings every so often, I would be absent to fulfill my service in hell. The good thing about having some power is that you can delegate responsibilities. Arodia knew perfectly well what I was doing, I'd bet she predicted it from the moment she saw us together, but it didn't bother her. Possessing bodies was something characteristic of the demon Abalam, although in essence I was not quite a demon, because I was not born in hell, but I fulfilled the vacancy.

Finally, on an autumn afternoon, her heart stopped. She was alone in the park and her grandchildren had said goodbye to her a couple of minutes earlier and entered her son's car. Of course it pained me to see her with another family and another husband, even though he had died young. Of course I had had nothing to do with it, I could have done it but to take away her happiness by my hand or my command would have made me a monster.

I fought with my strength against the impulsiveness and evil that had poisoned my soul, after so many years of living with evil beings. In this internal struggle, several times I became, with claws and horns, the infernal beast of a demon by all accounts. It took me days to return to my cadaverous form, which I had already considered as normal. In that state of dementia and possession, only hatred moved me. I could not think rationally, I was driven by a force greater than myself, greater than the remnants of my love for Amara. The covenant was cracking and I was desperate, furious, hurt and cursed. Trusting that spectral woman had been my mistake, but it had also given me hope. It had been gambling on chance. I was dead, but I could feel the physical pain in my bones, unable to bear the weight of abrupt loss, that light I felt slipping through my claws. Becoming a demon would nullify the deal, for I would no longer have memory and it would have been for me as if from the beginning of time I had been Abalam, nothing would matter to me anymore. However, all those times I fought so hard against myself and after several days, I had won the battle against the demon that wanted to grow in me.

It was hard, but here it was, a rumble amidst the orange leaves falling dry on the grass. When I felt it, I completely abandoned the body of Loui the florist in the middle of the floor of his own store. Surely a customer would come in and report his death to the police, because the truth is, the wretch didn't even have any close family. First, though, Nashira would arrive to guide his soul to where it belonged.

In a second I was in my spectral form next to her. She was sitting on the bench in her ghostly form, her body lying prone at the foot of a tree trunk, having been startled by the pain in her chest in the middle of her walk. I sighed before making my way over to her and sitting down next to her. She looked at me with a smile and her eyes lit up, I didn't understand why, until she said, "You came, love." Then I was a dead man who wanted to cry.

Arodia appeared before us, along with Nashira. The first woman explained that that day was the thousandth anniversary of my service, which surprised me because I was distracted just being attentive to Amara and keeping Loui's body visibly normal. Nashira for her part saw me with sadness and that's when I wondered if demons would have feelings. Arodia had arranged that by the time Amara died again, the memories she recovered and the conversation we had 50 years ago would be restored to her soul.

"The sin has been fulfilled, her soul now belongs in hell. The wish can be fulfilled," announced the one who had offered me a deal before she died. Amara smiled and in a second became the 27-year-old woman who had been my fiancée. Even as cadaverous looking as I was, she was still the light in my eyes. I didn't understand about sin, until Arodia explained that using her illness, Amara had taken enough pills to cause her complicated heart to fail, she had committed suicide. "I was tired and felt that someone was waiting for me. I said goodbye to my children and grandchildren, and decided to rest here watching the leaves fall," she said holding my hand. Was this how it was supposed to be? Had I influenced her decision? I was questioning a lot of things, but she just fixed her gaze on me and I knew everything was okay now. We finally kissed and I didn't know how to express how much I had waited for that.

I was tired. It was summer and the heat had drenched my forehead with sweat. The office felt like a sauna, it was as if we were being forced to work in hell. At least my car cooperated and the air conditioning kept me alive, while I was stuck in the long line in the middle of the highway. I was coming home in the afternoon. I figured my puppy, the one my sister had given me, would be hungry, poor thing. I was thinking about what I could make for dinner that would be quick and delicious, I was tempted to order food for delivery. But then I turned the steering wheel to enter the residential area and had to slam on the brakes.

I was leaning into the steering wheel and was about to explode with anger, but something stopped me. I got out of the car, leaving the door open and with my eyes wide with fright, I spoke to him, "Are you okay? You just appeared out of nowhere! How could you think of that? Are you hurt? I can call an ambulance." She had fallen on her left leg, with the bicycle catching her. Her eyes were bright and instead of complaining, she was laughing. "Easy, I'm still alive. More like excuse me, I thought I might pick up the pace to make my last delivery," she said.

I helped her to her feet and as she shook the dirt out of her clothes, I asked, "Are you sure you're okay?" She nodded downplaying it. I had been thinking about ordering food and just about ran over a delivery girl, I thought it was funny and didn't hold back my laughter at the irony. When she asked me if I was laughing at her, I said partly and explained my inside joke.

"Well, thanks for not running me over. Although if you're hungry and want to make it up to me, you can order food from where I work," she said with an amused gesture. "The truth is, yes I am hungry. I'm Gabriel, delivery girl by the way." He laughed more heartily than before and shaking my hand, as if we were making a pact, he replied, "And I Amara, nice to meet you."

"Remember, a thousand years of service in exchange for your wish. Your name will no longer be Loui the florist, here you will be Abalam the demon, the prince of hell."
