Hi friends! again I find myself exploring new genres, and today, I decided to flirt with horror, I hope you enjoy it!
Emotional responses are inherent to human beings; fear is one of them, a self-protection mechanism in the face of danger. Where I come from, everyone fears cemeteries, places where the souls that once walked the earth as pieces of bone and flesh rest. When I was a child I was not afraid of them, I liked to think of them as a door where, when you crossed it, you would end up in heaven or hell. My fear was directed in other directions.
I was always fragile; as a child I was sick for no reason, which generated overprotection and anguish in my parents, until one day everything stopped. I remember they called it a miracle, and I really felt grateful to some supreme force that worked for such an event.
When I healed, everything changed. The fear of the disease knocking on our doors led my parents to be even stricter, to the point of structuring 4 basic rules and a promise in the shelter of the night in front of candlelight: mirrors must be covered during the night, never respond to the whisper of the night, the cemetery is forbidden and never forget to wake up because everything you can't explain is a dream.
For years I lived under their rules, trapped within 4 walls where the outside would not harm me, according to my parents, who in an exchange promised never to leave me alone, until today, when they have passed away in a strange situation.
Angry at life for leaving me alone, I uncovered each mirror and walked outside. I did not keep my promise, as they broke theirs. Finding myself in front of the cemetery, I decided to cross it and go to the pavilion that belonged to our family. Inside, everything was covered with mirrors. I didn't understand what was happening, but remembering my parents, I cried myself to sleep.
Then I had a nightmare. A shadowy, ethereal being took a form much like my reflection in the mirror that morning. Its eyes were fixed, lifeless. I felt so afraid that I tried my best to escape from that terrible image, and in desperation I managed to wake up.
When I woke up, I was tied to a bed. My breathing was heavy; all I could hear were prayers from a group of people around me. I tried to escape and struggle, but to no avail. Then everything went dark.
I tried to scream, to call for help, but my voice was completely muffled, as in a macabre nightmare. Nothing made sense. Time passed slowly and anguish took over me more and more. I felt the strength leave my body, I lost consciousness and, when I woke up, I found myself in an urn, closed underground.
I heard voices shouting in the distance: "It's time for you to pay for the time that was given to you and doesn't belong to you". I felt as if a shot went through my body and I understood that I was dying. Then I could hear a whisper explaining what was happening.
I was not dying, for I had died long ago of an incurable disease. Out of desperation, my parents performed a ritual to bring me back to life, but the price was so costly that they had to steal souls from the village where we lived and traveled to each home through mirrors. The deal with death was: if I lived, many died.
For years, the villagers tried to escape the death that had settled for so long in the town. The cemetery was feared by all because it reminded them how helpless they were in the face of a cruel fate.
Until the day they managed to trap one of my parents with an ancient protection ritual, and when they realized what was happening, they decided to put an end to the demon that brought misfortune to their lives: me.
That whisper that spoke to me was death. When I left my home, I had no choice but to take him with me. The ritual of the villagers forced him to escape and I was the only soul that could be taken with me.
