¡Hola amigos!

No miré tu luz marchitarse.

Hello friends!
Today I present to you a short story in letter format, touching on a subject that is unfamiliar to no one: guilt.
Inspired by all of us who have put pride aside to ask for forgiveness, I have written a letter as a process of redemption, because everyone tells you how easy it is to hurt but no one tells you the remorse caused by hurting a loved one.
I hope you enjoy this letter that seeks to connect my heart with that of my readers. Best regards.

To: The love of my life.

From: The past.

Dear love, I don't know how much time has passed since a letter like this was sent. Life has changed, paper has been put aside, companionship has another meaning and hiding behind technological outlets became habitual.

When I started writing, something interesting happened: I began to think of you. Your image in front of the mirror that spoke of sadness and translated into sobs that you could not contain. I thought about how much I made you suffer and how I would like to see you happy.

Perhaps asking for your forgiveness or apology will not remove the weight of my remorse, but it will alleviate my guilt. And although I cannot promise to end your sadness, at least I hope it will bring you a little peace of mind.

I wanted to ignore the harm I caused you and continue with the life I planned for myself. An easy path with few obstacles and unanswered questions, but I couldn't. Then, I considered justifying myself with countless excuses that would explain my wrongdoing. Ending with a 'we're only human, we make mistakes.' But I believe I must take responsibility.

Writing is usually old-fashioned, so I thought about calling you, sending you a text, and communicating through video. But I'm so tired of keeping up with each other on a screen, pretending, responding with automated messages: 'yes, I'm fine,' sending a sticker, emoji, or sending an audio, without any deeper meaning. So I discarded the idea and started writing this letter, asking for your forgiveness.

My first mistake was not listening to you. I heard your voice over and over again commenting on your day, other people's behaviors towards you. And how in a world full of people, you could feel so alone and abandoned. I thought it absurd and exaggerated. I didn't watch your light fade.

I left you alone, I abandoned you and even worse, I displaced you. For thinking that if you are fine on the outside, the inside didn't matter. I put others above you, giving importance to their opinions about your life, their unfair judgments and mean-spirited comments. I left you defenseless to vampires who only sucked your energy and didn't let you shine.

You know, a mistake that I will never forgive myself for was underestimating you. Making you think that you were not enough, believing that your external image was the only thing you had to offer. Hiding behind makeup and clothes that didn't suit you, in order to fit into absurd models of perfection that we only see on social media. I never praised you, nor did I see your virtues and strengths. I was so obsessed with what was wrong that I didn't see what was right.

To conclude, my main mistake and the worst of all, one that was hard for me to admit and now fills me with guilt and despair, was not loving you unconditionally as is right. Without valuing your time, without protecting you, without honoring you as the unique and special being of incomparable worth that you are.

Sometimes I wish I could take time back and not allow you to suffer so much. But everything has a why, and every setback in our life brings learning and maturity in spades.

That is why I ask you to forgive me, because I am the only one to blame for your sadness. When you read this letter, I want you to know that it was written with my hands but dictated by the heart. A repentant one that, although it does not expect you to respond to its declaration of redemption, anxiously awaits that in time you will offer it your forgiveness.

Sincerely, the love of your life.

This post is part of a series of personal letters impregnated with my soul. I wrote them on one of those days where past mistakes plague you, where you begin to question your present and guilt tortures you like an incessant demon that haunts you relentlessly.

Guilt is such a heavy burden that it anchors you to the past, preventing you from living in the present. And although forgiveness has lost value for the world, if it is your way to lighten your step in the long journey of life, initiating a process of redemption can always be the first step towards the longed-for path of peace.

Soon I will be publishing the answer to this letter, stay tuned to my publications. A giant kiss.
