For you, my love
It was evening and Carmen had just arrived home after a long day at work. She took off her blazer and heels and headed for the kitchen.
He was hungry and wanted to fix himself something quick for dinner. She opened the refrigerator and looked for something she wanted. He saw a container with a label that said, "Vegetable soup. Enjoy." It was from her mother, who had left her food the day before. Carmen smiled and took it. She loved her mother's vegetable soup. It was comforting and delicious.
He put the container in the microwave and programmed it to heat up. In the meantime, he went to the living room and turned on the television. He wanted to watch the news and find out what was going on in the world. He sat down on the couch and grabbed the remote control. He flipped through the channels until he found one that was broadcasting the evening news. The anchorman was talking seriously about a topic that caught his attention.
"Police today arrested a dangerous serial killer who had been terrorizing the city for months. The suspect, identified as Hugo, the 35-year-old lefty, has confessed to killing seven people, all young, single women, whom he lured with fake profiles on social networks. The criminal's modus operandi was always the same: he summoned them in secluded places and made an incision in their chest, extracting their heart and storing it in a container. Then, he would send an anonymous note to the police with the message: "Another heart for my collection". The killer has been captured thanks to citizen collaboration, who alerted the authorities. We will continue to report."
Carmen froze when she heard the news. She could not believe her ears and eyes. The photograph of the delinquent presented in the newscast was of her ex-boyfriend. They dated for two years until she left him because of his unhealthy jealousy and psychological abuse. He did not take it well and harassed her for months, calling her, sending her messages, and showing up at her work.
Carmen had to change her phone number, e-mail address, and even her home address to get rid of him. She thought that would be the end of it, but she was wrong.
The microwave beeped, indicating that the soup was ready. Carmen got up from the couch, still stunned by the news. She went to the kitchen and opened the microwave. She picked up the bowl, careful not to burn herself, and set it on the table. She took off the lid and looked.
What he saw made him scream in horror. There was no vegetable soup inside the container.
It was a human heart.
And a note that said, "For you, my love."
