My husband grew up in downtown San Francisco, and when I say downtown, I mean you can see Alcatraz from his high school. Now, most of his childhood was like something out of a 70's crime flick, but there were highlights in there, and many of his fondest memories include food.

The other day he told me that one of his favorite things was to get up Saturday morning, go down to the corner store, get a fresh loaf of sourdough, come home, turn on Creature Feature, and spread chive cream cheese on the crispy, chewy sourdough while he enjoyed the show.

Now, it's garlic scape season around here, and I have a ton of them trickling into the house at the moment, so, my brain hatched a scheme as I gazed upon my voluminous scapes, why not attempt to re-create the hub's childhood treat? He's been working so hard lately, trying to get the skeet field done and dealing with broken vehicles, and I just wanted to offer him a bit of a pick me up, joy-eliciting thing.

So, I got out my flour. And I whipped up some overnight artisan no-knead bread dough.

This morning, I got out the cast iron dutch oven, rested, shaped, and baked the loaf of like sourdough bread. As the bread was cooling, I turned my attention to the chive cream cheese part of the plan.

While I do have chives about, I felt like the fresh scapes would taste absolutely divine whipped into some cream cheese. Garlic scapes have this wonderful peppery chivey garlicy taste, and I just had a feeling the hubs would adore it.

So, I then got out my food processor. A few minutes and a fair bit of noise later, the cream cheese concoction was complete.

I then sliced a thick slice of still warm, crusty bread, slathered some of the scapey spread onto it, and delivered it to my surprised hubs.

The only sound I heard after that resembled a contented sasquatch emanation. The hubs approved. I also think he was a little touched by the gesture.

And that made me happy.

Mission success!
