I come from a lineage
that bore the fingerprints of fear.
My father's father always
feared the white men's rifle—
the fear outlived him—
My father always feared
every policeman's gun—
he said it's a betrayer.
But, I axed this cycle of fear—
In this poem,
I wear the tongue of an incentive :
I don't like to hear a man withdraws
like a downpour too scared to sing and dance.
I don't like to hear the
only thing left for a man
to give to life was to "give up"
I wish everyone could
drag fear like an apprehended fugitive
and say to it—
oh fear, you don't
have a home here
