The future influences the present just as much as the past.
- Friedrich Nietzsche -
The weather has been bad lately, cold, wet and windy and it's been difficult to be upbeat about it. Winter can be like this sometimes but it's generally sporadic and doesn't usually stick around as long as it has.
I like to keep active outdoors and due to the weather feel confined, inhibited, and whilst I'm happy to do things inside like Lego, reading, cooking, writing and tinkering in my workshop for instance, I feel restricted when I can't get out and about in wilderness places. I've taken some walks and a hike or two but I feel in need of some sustained outdoor time.
Last weekend I'd planned to saddle up Big Dog, my four wheel drive, and go off roading but the weather was not suited, I don't mind getting Big Dog muddy if I have to, but intentionally going somewhere and doing it doesn't make sense to me.
I've been on trips where I've had no choice but to go mudding to get from one place to the next and no worries, in I go, but to purposefully do it when there's the option not to isn't something I'm keen on. It has to be cleaned of course, and that takes a long, long time so...I avoid mud driving if I can. I sort of regret it though, but would have been cursing myself for hours throughout the clean up if I'd done it.
I was going to off-road to a spot I know, light a fire, brew some coffee and sear some flesh on a grill but with hammering rain, bitingly cold temperatures and super boggy ground and I thought better of it. So, I stayed home and found something else to do...which was reading, working on my book a little, and I also grabbed a few macro shots in my garden in between rainfall, one of which is the image in this post.
In truth, I should have gone four wheel driving and regret not doing it. Life is pretty short and one never knows what the future holds...Hours of getting mud out of every nook and cranny of my four wheel drive...yeah, that sucks, but the hours getting it in there would have been awesome. I wonder what you might have done?
Have you ever been in a similar situation where you wanted to do something enjoyable but held back for some reason, the weather maybe? I think most of us have. Do you subscribe to the, there's no time like the present, paradigm? Have you ever done something in bad weather because you wanted to do that thing so badly that it didn't matter? Have you not done something, gone somewhere, that you enjoy and regretted it? If you have any thoughts feel free to comment below and let me know, I'll get back to you like always.
