There is a debate regarding the national dish of Singapore and I believe it is not settled yet at this point. There's no conclusion yet because there are groups who have their own opinion about it. One of the food that's being brought up to the ranks is the ever famous Chicken rice! This food is literally everywhere. You can find it in every food center, Kopitiams, and even in shopping malls. There's no denying that this food is one of the most recognizable Singapore dishes that nobody dares to reinvent. It tastes exactly the same wherever or whoever makes it here in Singapore. This is the kind of dish that only has one way of cooking it.
Basically it's already perfect in its own way.
I got my Chicken Rice at My Kampung food court. I think this is a relatively new brand of food court that only has Halal food stalls. There are different types of cuisines in this food court but none of the stalls offer any pork dishes and so I presume that the shops are only offering Halal food.
Why do I like chicken rice?
Aside from the nice aromatic flavor of the chicken rice, the meat itself is tender and it's moist. That's why nobody dares to reinvent the recipe because nobody wants to tamper with the right consistency of the chicken meat. Even a slight change in the recipe will result in a different taste and flavor.
This begs the question: why does this particular chicken rice dish taste sweet? On my first spoonful of chicken meat and rice, I already noticed that it tasted absurdly sweet and wondered where it came from. It is supposed to be a savory dish but now it tastes like a Japanese Chicken Teriyaki. I think the sweetness of the dish comes from the sauce that they drizzle on top of the dish.
