After months of taking photos of the flowers around the garden, I’ve come to realize something simple: beauty really is everywhere. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of slowing down and looking a little closer.
Many of the flowers I photograph are quite small. In fact, some of them are easy to ignore when walking around the garden because they don’t immediately stand out. We naturally notice the bigger and more colorful flowers first, while the tiny ones quietly grow somewhere in the background.
But photography has taught me that size doesn’t determine beauty.
Once I bring my camera closer and find the right angle, these small flowers suddenly reveal details that are difficult to appreciate with our eyes alone. Their petals, shapes, patterns, and even the tiny structures at the center of the flower become much more interesting.
I think having the right equipment helps, but technique is just as important. The right lighting, composition, focus, and distance can completely change how an ordinary subject appears in a photograph. And when I convert the image into black and white, the shapes, textures, highlights, and shadows become even more noticeable.
That is one of the reasons I continue to enjoy photographing flowers. There always seems to be something new to discover, even when I’m photographing the same garden again and again.
Maybe life is similar in that way. We often look for something grand before we call it beautiful, while many wonderful things are already around us waiting to be noticed.
Sometimes, we simply need to look closer.
