What Are Essential Oils?

There is so much talk about essential oils today. They say they can do everything, infections, headaches, stress and even weight loss. But how much do you really know about essential oils? And do they work? Where do they come from, should I try to use them. I was very doubtful but I have had some success with the essential oil. I avoid medicine as much as I can. Oils are nature’s way of helping us. There is never been a more critical time to start looking at natural alternatives for the diseases in our lives.Over 1000 people are dying of cancer and over 600,000 will die from a heart attack this year. Many people are falling apart from poor diet and lack of exercise. They say if you make good choices you will have longevity, but what are the right choices?

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years. The Bible mentions essential oils, even bringing to baby Jesus gold, frankincense, and myrrh but why these oils, and what did they do? Frankincense so they say is the king of all oils that was used in incense in Biblical Times. Myrrh was used as an ointment and an embalming ingredient and used as a beauty treatment. There are 12 oils that the Bible mentioned over and over. In fact, archaeologist’s found 50 alabaster jars that contained essential oils and some of them were completely full and still good.

The Chinese also believed in the power of the essential oils. Maybe even earlier than Egyptians it was the upper class of the citizens in China who used these plants oils to scent their homes, clothing, ink, paper, and cosmetics. Ancient Chinese medicine truly understood that herbs in all types have specific healing property. The Greeks and even the crusaders used essential oils to help them get through battles and daily needs. Today, as with everything, there is much controversy over essential oils and their uses.

Essential oils are known as volatile oils; they’re very different from fixed oils. Fixed oils are oils from plants. Fixed oils do not evaporate in the air. Essential oils however evaporate rapidly into the air and pass more quickly into the body through the skin. Essential oils use a steam distillation process called pressing or CO2 extraction.

So why are they called essential oils? Essential amino acids are essential to your body but your body cannot produce them. You have to get these essential oils from the food you eat. They are essential because we need them. But when we talk about essential oils we are talking about something different. It actually means embodying the essence of something. They are the natural liquids that comes from the very essence of plants. Essential oils are the plant’s essence. Understanding essential oils will give you the opportunity to see if they are right for you.

Plants are way more complex than you ever thought before, they are the only living things that can produce their own energy and they do this by using the light of the sun. We are all dependent on plants in one way or the other for our survival. The chemicals in plants are what makes them so fascinating. Every plant uses a color and a scent to keep animals away. And they also have a scent that brings pollination to them and some plants release a chemical that keep other plants from growing in their yard! So it is the oil from these plants that can help our bodies to calm down and even heal.

The way an essential oil is produced is very important. You need to purchase pure unadulterated genuine oils. You also need to learn how to apply them. Some oils, if they are not diluted with a carrier oil, can cause skin irritations. You also have to watch the dosage. It’s not something you just want to go out and buy and try. Take the time to study and research and ask the experts who are using it.
