Treasures

I had the opportunity to spend the past weekend with a very special couple. It was an awesome weekend. The love that was expressed was beautiful but even more so was how thankful they were for the smallest things. It made my eyes tear and brought peace to my heart. In a society where money seems to rule, it was refreshing to see the minimal things that they had but I never heard them complain once about what they didn’t have but be happy for what they did.
So many times in life we miss those daily treasures. The smile from your baby at 2 o’clock in the morning when you just want to sleep. The puppy who waits every day at the door for just a pet from you. Or the child who just wants to talk but you haven’t the time because you have to get dinner ready, do the laundry or wash the car.
The older I get the more I see the missed treasures and it makes me sad. There is always tomorrow to do your “chores”. Now I am not saying sit and play all day! But look daily for those sweet times that you won’t have again, and take the time to enjoy them. Memory is a funny thing. Keep the good memories and don’t waste your time remembering the bad. Live today and be happy.
So how do you stay happy and really be thankful for every day? First and foremost look for the best in people. Maybe they are having a really bad day but you do not have to join their party! Look beyond them and try to see what is bothering them, maybe by doing that you can change their mood and make their day better. Tell them that they have nice eyes or you love their shoes, compliments are a great way to brighten someone’s day and it return, it will brighten yours.
There is more than what you see in the here and now, look at the big picture. Once you get through whatever there will be a treasure that you never imagined at the end. It may look bad now but in the scheme of things is it really bad or will it pass? Try not to get negative or it will be a downward spiral. If it is something that you feel as though you can’t escape, go into survival mode. it is ok to regroup and recharge. Remember if you are negative and talk that way people really don’t remember what you said they only remember that you were unhappy and negative. You can either leave a fingerprint or a bruise, and quite frankly, bruises hurt!
out of your zone and go for a walk. Look at what is around you, find the treasures. Watch the little sparrow getting the worm or the chipmunk with his cheeks puffed out and full of nuts. Sit by someone on a bench and if they talk to you, listen. Especially if they are older, yes they may be lonely but they have so much wisdom to give, a treasure. Smile at those you pass, remember a smile costs nothing but it gives so much.
Laugh! It does a body good. There is nothing I love to hear more than a hearty laugh. Listening to it just makes me smile. There are things in this life that aren’t as big of a deal as we make them out to be and laughter breaks down stress. Laughter forms a bond, it breaks down awkwardness and even brings strangers together. Learn to laugh at yourself and don’t sweat the small stuff because in the long run that small stuff you worried over really doesn’t matter.
Treasure life. It is a gift, open it and find the treasures. Name your day, when I was going through a really rough time I would wake up, force myself to get out of bed and name my day. For example, thankfulness that would be the day name. I would stand in front of my mirror and say, “Today’s name is thankfulness and I will be thankful in all things and look for things to be thankful for.” This actually took my mind off my situation and made me look for things to be thankful for, new treasures to seek and find. Other names were, happy, joyful, content, funny, you get it! Try it for a month I guarantee it will really change your attitude and your prospective.
Be thankful for the treasures you do have and don’t wish your life away. Gratitude is really powerful it helps sometimes to list all that you do have. I know a woman who by many standards would think she has nothing, yet she gives away what she does have and would never let anyone she is acquainted with sleep in the street. Many nights her tiny one bedroom apartment is filled with those less fortunate than she. Wow right? She seems to get it.
Treasure isn’t lots of money, its lots of peace, happiness, contentment and love. We really don’t remember days we remember moments. Treasure the good moments and get rid of the bad. Let go and forgive move on and be happy. Look for that daily treasure and then smile and enjoy it.
