But Diet Has The Word "Die" In It
wake up and you get out of bed passing the mirror as you go by. You stop and look amazed at how you look, you hardly recognize that person. You know that you need to make a change, you are unhealthy and overweight. Your blood pressure is high and so is your cholesterol. Your doctor just told you that you are on the verge of diabetes and metabolic syndrome and you are not even sure what that is. You certainly do not want to start another diet, diet has the word die in it and who wants to die from food?
Metabolic syndrome is actually a cluster of health conditions that increase your risk of heart disease, stroke or diabetes. Having two or more of the following conditions would mean that you have metabolic syndrome. The cluster of conditions is, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels. Losing weight significantly lowers or eliminates these conditions. According to the American Heart Association, metabolic syndrome is a serious condition that affects about 23% of adults.
Now back to dieting. I do not call it a diet because of the word die in it. You need to wrap your head around changing habits and lifestyle to improve your health. Set some goals and meet them.
One of the first things I ask my clients to do is give up sugar and sugary drinks. Sugar has no nutritional value at all. When you eat or drink it your body has to produce insulin to process that sugar. If you eat too much and your body cannot produce enough insulin to take care of it then it is stored as fat. Abdominal obesity means for women your waist circumference is greater than 35 inches and in men, it is greater than 40 inches, and you do not want to add more fat to your waist.
When you store fat you mess up your leptin levels. Leptin is a hormone produced by your fat, lots of fat lots of leptin and your body becomes resistant. Leptin is the hormone that tells you that you are full so stop eating. When you have too much of it it doesn’t work so you are hungry because ghrelin(a peptide hormone, produced predominantly in the stomach, that stimulates the secretion of growth hormone from the pituitary gland and increases appetite.) kicks in. So give up sugar.
Try that for a week or two. Don’t be alarmed if you wake up feeling worse after a couple of days without sugar. Sugar is as addictive as opium and when you withdraw from it you feel as though you may be coming down with a virus. We call it the sugar flu and you will feel great in a few days. No matter how hard it is stick with the no sugar. Check your labels and eat whole foods.
Stay away from processed foods. Processed foods are filled with excitotoxins. Excitotoxins excites our taste buds and can make bland food taste wonderful and make real food not taste very good. They have also found that they play a critical role in the development of serious neurodegenerative damage such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, migraines, and seizures.
Make these habit changes and lifestyle changes and you will never have to diet. Habit is always looking in the junk food cupboard for a snack. Change the habit to grabbing some healthy nuts or a piece of fruit. After you continue to make the same healthy choice over and over it will become part of your lifestyle and the weight will fall off and you will never have to diet again.
