Hello, friends of Holus Lotus. As usual, I’m sharing a reflective piece, but this time it’s about a natural disaster.
Recently, in my country, Venezuela, there was a double earthquake that claimed many lives and left us with many questions and feelings that make us look beyond the immediate and rethink what truly matters.
Because on this occasion I am no longer writing about personal growth; this time I am writing from a reality that very few of us like to talk about, and that is the fragility of life, uncertainty and that feeling that we are nothing.
Because, certainly, tomorrow is not guaranteed to anyone, no matter how good we think we are; because when it comes to nature, it makes no distinction between social status or whether we have unfinished business, because there isn’t always an ‘after’
Because one of the hardest things in life is accepting what cannot be explained
And that makes us so vulnerable and leads us to a sense of resignation.
As a country, we have been through a great deal and have learnt to be very resilient; yet it is also valid to feel and let our emotions wash over us.
But sometimes I ask myself, in all sincerity, How long will this go on?
Of course, I must be grateful that I am alive whilst thousands of people have died; it’s very harsh, but it’s the truth.
Because beyond the obvious lies the question: where do life and God fit into all this
Perhaps it is a very human tendency to look for someone to blame and to want answers; however, we won’t always have them, and we must learn to live with that.
I remember a psychotherapy session when I went to see a therapist about anxiety issues; she helped me gain a very deep understanding of inner peace.
And I realised that one of our biggest problems is wanting to know everything and control everything in order to feel at peace and calm, when in reality it is our ego that craves certainty.
But if there’s one thing I’ve learnt from this earthquake, it’s that life is uncertain, fragile and full of uncertainties, because we don’t know when our last day will come.
Because many left without saying goodbye, others promised to return home, whilst others survived to tell the tale
Because the earth shook, our bodies trembled, and our consciousness was opened up even further.
We are a country forged from struggles, battles and scars, and this has brought us to our knees once again; and yes, we must allow ourselves to feel and express our emotions so that we can rise up and accept that life can take us by surprise at any moment, but that life itself also gives us reasons to carry on after all.

However, at times like these, our hearts ache.
To conclude, let’s learn to live in the present and not let despair get the better of us. For whilst it is true that this may leave us with many unanswered questions, the very same life that takes many things away from us today will give us others tomorrow.
