Preparing a Traditional Design for My Sister’s Choli for Navratri
Greetings of the day,
Navratri is getting closer, and I have started preparing for the festival in my own little way. Navratri is one of my favorite times of the year because the whole atmosphere becomes colorful and energetic. People start preparing their traditional clothes, decorating their homes, planning garba nights, and getting ready to celebrate with family and friends. This time, I wanted to do something a little different for my sister. Instead of simply buying a ready-made design, I decided to create a traditional design on the fabric for my sister’s choli. I wanted the design to have a colorful Gujarati and Indian traditional feel, so I took inspiration from floral patterns, elephants, circular motifs, and colorful embroidery styles. I had already seen similar traditional artwork before, and I wanted to create something inspired by that style in my own way.
I started the work by planning the main circular pattern. I wanted the design to look balanced, so I began from the center and slowly worked toward the outer portions. The center has a floral pattern, and around it I added different decorative shapes and traditional motifs. I also included small flowers and elephant designs because they give the artwork a very traditional and festive appearance. I used several bright colors such as red, yellow, blue, green, orange, and pink. These colors reminded me of the colorful clothes we usually see during Navratri and garba celebrations. While making the design, I had to pay attention to the spacing between each pattern because even a small difference can make a circular design look uneven. It took patience to keep everything properly arranged, but I enjoyed the process.
One thing I really enjoyed about this activity was that it was completely handmade. These days, it is very easy to purchase printed fabrics and ready-made designs from the market, but creating something yourself gives it a different feeling. While working on my sister’s choli design, I was thinking about how it would look once the complete outfit was ready. I wanted something that would look traditional but also have a personal touch. My sister will hopefully wear this outfit during Navratri, especially when going for garba. Gujarati traditional clothing is already very colorful and beautiful, and adding a handmade design can make the outfit feel even more personal. I also felt that doing creative work like this is a nice way to spend time instead of always being busy with phones or other routine activities.
The process was not completely easy. At some points, I had to stop and look at the overall pattern to decide what should come next. Sometimes a line or shape did not come out exactly as I had imagined, so I had to adjust the design. But I decided not to worry too much about making it perfectly symmetrical. For me, the important thing was that the final design should look attractive and, most importantly, that it should be something I had made myself for my sister. As I continued adding the different patterns, the design slowly started taking shape. Once I could see the complete circular artwork, I felt really happy with the result. The combination of the flowers, elephants, geometric patterns, and colorful borders gave it the festive look I was hoping for. Seeing the finished work also gave me the motivation to try more handmade designs in the future.
Overall, this was a really enjoyable experience and a nice part of my Navratri preparation. Instead of simply purchasing something ready-made, I got the opportunity to create something with my own hands for someone in my family. I think festivals become more memorable when we are involved in the preparation ourselves. Whether it is decorating the house, preparing food, choosing clothes, or making something handmade, every little activity adds to the excitement. Now I am looking forward to seeing how this design looks on my sister’s final choli. I hope she likes it and enjoys wearing it during Navratri. For me, this was not just a design-making activity; it was a small creative project made with time, patience, and lots of excitement for the upcoming festival.
