Fabric cutting is not just about placing the fabric on the table to start drafting and cutting. One thing is to know how to sew, another thing is to know how to place your fabric patterns rightly (by fabric pattern I mean the designs on your fabric) in order to create a beautiful design.
One can buy a beautiful fabric and end up not liking the outfit after being sewn, this might be because of how the fabric was cut, may be the designs on the fabric weren't placed properly to bring out the beauty of the outfit
Paying attention to details is one of the ways to succeed in every endeavour— the ability to think smartly and create something beautiful.
Knowing how to place your designs before cutting a particular fabric can completely change the entire look of that outfit. It can be a simple style but turns out really beautiful because someone payed attention to the fabric's design.
If you take a look at this outfit, you'll realize that there are different colours though the same pattern. While cutting the fabric, it took me some minutes before I could successfully cut, because I was thinking of a better way to cut it so as to make the colours align properly and also complement the brown crepe material I used. Maybe, this outfit wouldn't have come out this beautiful or maybe it have been better if I had placed the designs differently. But the point is that paying attention to your fabric and its designs while cutting is where the making of the outfit begins because it determines the outcome of the outfit.
Another reason one should always consider the designs on the fabric is because of the person that would wear the outfit.
If you're working with a fabric that has stripes, for example, you need to pay attention to the design while cutting, this is because what works for a tall person might not work for a short person. If you're sewing for a short client, the stripes has to be placed vertically. That is, the stripes should be placed up-down. While the the same fabric can be placed horizontally(across) for a tall client.
The vertical stripes would make the body look longer, boost the height of a short person, and make them look taller, while a tall person will be fine with horizontal stripes since they're already tall. So, the horizontal stripes would break-up their height, and make them look more balanced. This is just one of many examples.
I have noticed how beautiful a dress turns out because of the way the designs on the fabric were skillfully placed when cutting. I'm not saying an outfit would not look beautiful if the designs are not placed rightly, but it's just not going to look well put together. In as much as we're trying to grow in the fashion space, this should be a detail we don't leave out in order to create something outstanding.
It's cute if your work can speak for itself, that way you don't over explain, people already see the result ant don't need more convincing.
I thought to share, I hope it helps or serves as a reminder.
