Hello friends, today I want to show you a portrait I made with charcoal and graphite pencil, I made this portrait from an old pocket photograph. It is a commission from a friend, his father died 3 years ago and he told me he wanted a portrait of his father, he gave me the photograph and it is from the time when he was in the military service, he was 19 years old. It has been a great challenge since I had not done a job of this magnitude before, I want to share my experience with you, I hope you like it.
Hola amigos, hoy quiero mostrarles un retrato que hice con carboncillo y lápiz de grafito, este retrato lo hice a partir de una antigua fotografía de bolsillo. Es un encardo de un amigo, su padre falleció hace 3 años y me dijo que quería un retrato de su padre, me dio la fotografía y es de la época cuando estuvo en el servicio militar, contaba con 19 años de edad. Ah sido un gran desafío ya que no había realizado antes un trabajo de esta magnitud, quiero compartir mi experiencia con ustedes, espero que les agrade.
PROCESS
The first step was to digitize the image to make it bigger and more visible since it is very difficult to do it directly from the photograph. So I put the photo in a scanner and took a shot, which I took to a larger size. In the enlargement I could see that the passing of the years had damaged the photograph so I did my best to restore the image. I started the drawing by making a sketch with a 4H pencil that has a very hard and clear tip, and then I erased those lines that will guide me later.
El primer paso fue digitalizar la imagen para hacerla más gran y visible ya que es muy dificl hacerla directamente de la fotografía. Así que la foto la puse en un scanner e hice una toma, la cual la llevé a un tamaño mayor. En la ampliación pude ver que el paso de los años han dañado la fotografía asi que hice mi mejor esfuerzo en restaurar la imagen. Comcencé el dibujo realizando un boceto con un lápiz 4H que es de una punta muy dura y clara, para luego borrar esas líneas que me guiarán más adelante.
In the next step I concentrated on the center of the face, on the eyes, nose and mouth, when using an old photo the lines of expression are completely absent, so you have to give volume to the face using shading and trying to be as as faithful as possible in the outline of each of the aforementioned parts. So with a 2H pencil and an HB I take care of giving shape and volume and then go for the shading.
En el siguiente paso me concentré en el centro del rostro, en ojos nariz y boca, al se runa foto antigua las líneas de expresión estan ausentes en su total por lo que hay que darle volumen al rostro utilizando el sombreado y tratando de ser lo más fiel posible en el trazo de cada una de las partes antes mencionadas. Así que con un lapiz 2H y un HB voy encargandome de dar forma y volumen para luego ir por el sombreado.
With an HB pencil I started the first layer of shading, I used this pencil for its clarity and at the same time for its hardness, it covers the paper but not completely and allows the use of darker shades of pencil. On the whole face I was left over using very soft but fast strokes to make it look uniform.
Con un lápiz HB comencé la primera capa del sombreado, utilicé este lápiz por su claridad y a la vez por su dureza, cubre el papel pero no en su totalidad y permite utilizar tonos más oscuros de lápiz. En todo el rostro estuve sobrando utilizando trazos muy suaves pero rápidos para que se vea uniforme.
Then I use a 2B pencil, this one has a softer but darker tip and is ready to blend, with this pencil the shadows are more accentuated. Once we make the first strokes we can blur with a soft brush and see how the shadow turns out, for the lines that define the face I used a 4B pencil that is darker.
Luego utilizo un lápiz 2B, este posee una punta más suave pero más oscura y lista para difuminar, con este lápiz las sombras quedan más acentuadas. Una vez que hacemos los primeros trazos podemos difuminar con un pincel suave y ver como va quedando la sombra, para las líneas que definen el rostro utilicé un lápiz 4B que es más oscuro.
After blurring the face I began to paint the military beret and the suit. Here I did not use pencil but black and dark brown. The process was almost the same, soft strokes to then blur with a brush, as it is a wax crayon, I used mineral oil to better mix the colors, for the uniform I used a dark green color to give it that tone that military colors have, this was improvisation because in the original image everything is in black and white.
Despues del difuminado del rostro comencé a pintar la boína militar y el traje. Aquí no utilicé lápiz sino color negro, y marrón oscuro. El proceso fue casi igual, trazos suaves para luego difuminar con un pincel, como es creyón de cera, usé aceite mineral para mezclar mejor los colores, para el uniforme utilicé un color verde oscuro para darle ese tono que tienen los colores militares, esto fue improvisación porque en la imagen original todo está en blanco y negro.
This is how this portrait has been finished, the size is 3 centimeters long by 22 centimeters wide, almost the size of a letter sheet. Being an old photo, the colors tend to degrade over time, in these cases it is always good to use either charcoal, graphite pencil or sad colors such as sepia or some gray scale. Así ha quedado finalizado este retrato, el tamaño es de 3 centímetros de largo por 22 centímetros de ancho, casí del tamaño de una hoja carta. Al ser una foto antigua los colores suelen degradarse con el tiempo, para estos casos siempre es bueno utilizar ya sea carboncillo, lápiz de grafito o colores tristes como sepia o alguna escala de grises.
