Hello, dear friends at Hive DIY! I hope you are all doing well. Lately, my teaching commitments have kept me away from my blog for a bit, but now I’m back to share something I truly love doing: drawing. For this post, I’ve created a piece of fan art featuring Jim Morrison, the lead singer of The Doors—a band that pioneered psychedelic rock in the 1970s. Jim Morrison was more than just a great vocalist; he also wrote poetry rich in symbolism, which he skillfully wove into his music to craft remarkable compositions. Inspired by this, and while listening to one of his best albums, I created this drawing—which I’m excited to share with you all. I hope you like it and enjoy it!
Hola queridos amigos de Hive DIY espero que se encuentren muy bien, últimamente mis labores de enseñanza me han alejado un poco de mi blog, pero ene sta oportunidad he regresado para compartir con ustedes lo que más me gusta hacer: dibujar. Para esta ocasión he realizado un fan art de Jim Morrison, vocalista de la banda The Doors, pioneros del rock psicodélico en los años 70. Jim Morrison no solo fue una gran voz, también escribía poesía llena de mucho simbolismo la cual supo trasladar a la música y realizar grandes composiciones. Teniendo esta influencia en mente y escuchando uno de sus mejores discos es que he realizado este dibujo el cual quiero compartir con ustedes. Espero que les guste y lo disfruten.
I made some purchases, and the receipt I was given was quite large; whenever I buy something, I find myself thinking about what the receipt will be like—and also about the next piece of art I’ll create. Some people are still skeptical that I use this kind of paper for drawing, but they’re always surprised when they see the results. So, for this project, I’m starting with a simple pencil sketch, though I’ve gradually moved toward going straight in with ink—without any fear of making mistakes.
Hice unas comprar, y el recibo de compra que me dieron era amplio, siempre que hago una compra pienso como será el recibo y también en la próxima obra que haré. Algunas personas aún dudan de que utilizo este papel para dibujar, pero al ver los resultados quedan sorprendidos. Así que para esta oportunidad comienzo haciendo el boceto con simple lápiz, poco a poco e ido optando ir directamente por la tinta sin temor a cometer errores.
Then, little by little, I worked on the center of his face, starting with the nose. Jim Morrison used the title "Lizard King" as an alias for an alter ego; in truth, his face had a serpentine appearance—something that I believe greatly enhanced his stage presence whenever he performed with his band.
Luego fui haciendo poco a poco el centro del rostro, comenzando desde la nariz. Jim Morrison utilizaba como alias de un alter ego el título de Rey Lagarto, y la verdad es que su rostro tenía la apariencia de una serpiente, creo que eso le ayudaba mucho en su puesta en escena siempre que salía a cantar con su banda.
Next, I began using the simple technique of scribbling—moving the pen tip aimlessly, yet staying within the outline I had previously drawn. In this way, the face gradually emerges; it’s a method I apply to all my drawings. Then, I add some hair—Jim Morrison always wore his very long, as was common for that era.
Seguidamente comencé a utilizar la sencilla técnica de los garabatos, mover la punta del bolígrafo sin sentido pero dentro de la forma antes dibujada. Es así como poco a poco va apareciendo el rostro, es lo que practico en todos mis dibujos siempre que lo realizo. Luego voy agregando un poco de cabello, el cual Jim Morrison siempre utilizaba muy largo, como era normal llevarlo en aquellas épocas.
For the hair, I had to concentrate a lot of ink to make it look thick and dark. The tip of this ballpoint pen was very fine, so each stroke resembled an actual strand of hair—that is to say, it was extremely thin. Consequently, I had to create numerous lines, dashes, and circles to gradually darken the hair and cover the entire area. The key to following each step of the process is that the final form ends up matching what we had originally envisioned; that is why it is necessary to proceed little by little.
En el cabello debi concentrar mucha tinta para hacerlo abundante y tambien oscuro. La punta de este bolígrafo era muy fina por lo que trazo parecia la línea de un cabello real, es decir, muy fina. Así que debía hacer muchas líneas, rayas y círculos para que el cabello fuera quedando oscuro y así ir cubriendo toda la zona. Lo importante de cumplir cada proceso es que la forma va quedando como la habíamos imaginado en un principio, por eso hay que ir poco a poco.
To add more volume to the work I’ve done so far, I’m switching tools and using a marker. Its ink is more fluid, which results in broader strokes—perfect for when I want to increase the volume and keep the drawing strictly in black and white. I go back over the entire head of hair and parts of the face. I also incorporate a blue marker into some of the shadows, giving the drawing a more urban, artistic aesthetic.
Ahora para agregar mas volumen a todo el proceso que he realizado hasta ahora, cambio de herramienta y utilizo un marcador, la cual la tinta es más líquida por lo que el trazo queda mas grande, es útil utilizarla cuando queremos que el volumen sea mayor y nuestro dibujo quede perfectamente en blanco y negro. Así que lo que hago es volver a pintar todo el cabello y partes del rostro. También agrego marcador azul en algunas sombras para que el dibujo tenga una estética artística más urgana.
