In today's world, there are a lot of things that go with divorce. It's either the woman suing to go away with half of the man's properties, or the guy fighting not to allow the woman to have a share of his wealth if he is rich. In some other cases, it could be a fight over who will have the children after the divorce.
In a court section, the scenery for a divorce case can be funny at times, you will see a fully grown man kneeling before the court registrar begging them to not allow his wife to take his properties because they are what his life depends on for survival. You will hear a woman saying to the court "All I want is my share of what we gather together".
You could see a woman crying to the court not to grant her husband's wish for a divorce because she doesn't have anywhere else to go. You could even see prospective divorcees fighting and dragging their children like the case of the two harlots who asked King Solomon to divide the child in the Bible. It can be so hilarious to watch and listen to a divorce case in a law court. Such is the case that I intend to share with you, so sit back as I share with you a typical divorce court case between my neighbor and his wife about a year ago.
My neighbor and his wife were having a lot of problems and couldn't agree on how to make the marriage work, so he decided to do the unthinkable and divorce his wife. The couple was living in a 2 bedroom flat with their 3 children; 1 son, and 2 daughters. They had been married for five years and has been having troubles all along.
One day, he came home and told his wife that the marriage is over and that he intends to go ahead and divorce her. The wife too told him she was ready for the divorce, but that the court will deal with the matter. But when they get to the court, the matter was turned into a comedy section. They both wanted to share their 3 kids equally.
The wife speaks to the magistrate, "Your honor, I the mother of the children, I will go with 2 kids while he goes with 1. My children cannot live without their mother". The husband fired back, " No my Lord, I am their father and need to be present with them as they grow. I will go with 2 kids, she can go with 1".
Hmmm, the judge sigh! " So you two want to go away with 2 kids, what do you want us to do now?"
On hearing that, the husband look at his wife, and as if he sent a message to her, they both stepped out of the witness boxes and start conversing with each other in a very low voice. After a few minutes, they turned to the judge with smiling faces and said, "Your honor, we have agreed to make peace for now, we want you to give us permission to go back home and come back after a year for this matter. We want to make one more baby so that we can share them equally."
On hearing that, almost everyone in the court room bursted into laugher, even the judge couldn't hold back. We were shocked to hear that, but the couple were unfazed. The judge asked them is something is wrong with them, they replied unanimously "No my Lord".
The judge grants their request. 9 months after they had twins. The sharing wahala continue!
When they were summoned to appear at the court after the one year leave expired, the lawyer handling the case came to them and brought some papers for his fees saying he can no longer continue with the case. The husband told his wife she will have to pay half of the fees. But the woman laughed and told the lawyer to wait for the final verdict.
At the court, they still could not accept the other to go with the higher numbers of kids. The judge, therefore, sent them back to their house to produce one more kid since that would be the only logical way to settle the matter. They went home and again after 9 months they had another set of twins.
That was how Mr. Akpan and his wife continue to remain husband and wife till today. It was as if God never wanted them to have a divorce.
