I was going to write this post as soon as I get back home from working on my new apartment, but I felt very tired and decided to rest before putting my thoughts together into words. Well, it's past midnight already, and I couldn't sleep either even though I have said I wanted to rest. So, here I am, writing this at an odd hour of the night, trying to make sense of everything going on in my life right now.
If there is one thing I hated the most, it would have to be moving places so frequently, yet I have always found myself doing it over and over again for reasons beyond my control. Within the past 10 years, I have had to move places 7 times, and this will be making it the 8 time within those 10 years.
One of the major reasons for these frequent relocation has been my job as a pastor which left me with little choice of my own but to follow wherever the church assigned me to go to serve the congregation. This has lead to moving my family across cities and villages four times before I decided to resign about 3 years ago and relocate to my home town where I thought I could finally settle down and build a stable life for my family and myself.
However, for the 3 years I have been back in my own town, I have been very unlucky with housing situation and had to move 3 times due to landlord issues and property disputes that were beyond my control. Whenever I thought I had finally found the perfect apartment and settled in, something would go wrong and I would be forced to pack and leave for a new place. It's as if every building I rented were prearranged to be sold within only a year of my moving in.
Three times in three years, the same repeated circle - the building get sold, and the new owner wants renovation done or increase the house rent to an amount almost double of what I was paying before, forcing me to leave which I believe is what they wanted in the first place.
The effects of these constant relocation has affected a lot of things in my life and that of my family members - from my children education, social connections, to our financial instability and emotional well being throughout these years. You might think that, oh, it's just moving into a new place and changing environment, and that shouldn't be difficult, but the reality is far exhausting and costly than most people think.
You are going to start making new decorations for your new apartment from scratch. Painting walls, fixing up what needs to be fixed before you can move into the apartment, buying new curtains to match the new place. All these drained your money which could've been used for other important expenses like children school fees.
The most devastating part of it is the friends and relationships you have to leave behind every time you move places. This is especially true for the kids who have no way to connect with their old friends, and have to start from scratch building new friendship in yet another unfamiliar environment where they look like strangers and struggle to fit in with their classmates in a new school.
I don't know how to break this chain of frequent relocation and find stability for my family in our lives, but I hope that this time things will finally turn around and we can live in this new place for at least a few years without any disruption or force move. I am crossing my fingers that this apartment will finally be my stable place, where I could be able to gather myself financially towards building my own house and say goodbye to renting forever.
Well, I did the painting of the wall yesterday evening and we could be moving in within the next couple of days once we finish setting up the necessary things that we want to replace or repair before we bring in our belongings into the new apartment.
Wish me well.
