Kira felt his presence before she saw him. She shuddered and turned.
"Jasper," she said. He was standing holding the empty half-pint and some coins in his hands.
"Hello, again," he said.
Kira found it hard to believe that this guy was Marion's cousin. She was such a warm wonderful person, throwing off vibes of kindness and joy. Jaspers vibes felt unclean. Like some kind of cloud of wrongness that clung to him. He was wearing a woolly sweater that looked as though it might have been handmade.
"Nice jumper," she said, at a loss of what to say to him.
"Thanks. My mum made it for me."
His mum. I mean the guy must be in his early forties.
"Right," Kira said.
"She died last month."
Oh. Now, you feel like an arse, don't you Kira.
She remembered Marion going for the funeral. Her aunt, Betsy. Of course.
"I'm sorry, Jasper."
She caught Dave's eye. "Can you get, Jasper whatever he's having?" Kira placed some coins on the bar and Jasper smiled.
