"Tick-tock," the voice said. The mobile phone was hot against my ear.

"I don't understand," I said, my voice barely a whisper.

"Pay attention, Brad," the voice said. "You are running out of time." I looked around me, wondering if the person on the other end of the phone was watching me.

"You can't see me," the voice said, confirming my fear. "So you might as well stop looking for me and get on with your task. Time is running out Brad. Do you want to be responsible for Helen's death?"

"What do I have to do?" I asked.

"I've told you, Brad. You need to go up to the policeman. The one standing at the bar of the cafe. You need to call him an arsehole, Brad."

I shook my head.

"If you don't do it, Brad, in the next five seconds I will cut off one of Helen's fingers." In the background, I heard my wife scream.

"Okay!" I shouted. The girl on the table next to me looked up alarmed.
