"The last treasurer was either a fool or a thief," Black said. "We never really knew which."
I furrowed my brow. "Surely, you know it's one or the other... or both?"
Black shook his head. "Either he is a thief but very clever, because we could never find evidence that he had took the money, or he is a fool and let someone else get hold of his keys."
I shrugged. "Perhaps I can find the money," I said. "I'm good at following paper trails. It is my thing."
"That's why we asked for you," Black said. "You've come highly recommended. I just hope you are worth it." He gestured at the filing cabinet behind me. "You should find all you need in there. And Julie can help you find anything else." I nodded. "And you know how to contact me," Black said, standing. "I'll leave you to it."
Black closed the door on the way out, leaving me with only the ticking clock for company.
