Prompt: loathing

Kira listened as Marion expressed her loathing of Art the rat. Kira had a mild phobia of spiders so could relate to Marion's anger. If a relative of hers had brought a massive spider into her flat with - or without - her knowledge she would be furious.
"Jasper has been through a lot," Marion said. "But I think he is taking the piss."
Kira took a deep breath.
"I guess Art could come and stay at my house for a couple of days." Marion looked at her in the eye. "I don't have room for Jasper," Kira said hurriedly. "But if it will help I could take Art. I used to have rabbits when I was a kid. Looking after a rat can't be that different."
Marion came over took the mug of tea from Kira's hand and placed it on the worktop. She gave Kira a long hug.
"Thank you," she whispered. "I'll go and tell, Jasper."
Kira watched Marion go to the bathroom. She picked up her mug of tea, took a sip and wondered what she had gotten into.

"Thank you for doing this," Jasper said, passing over the rat to Kira. "Art is a very affectionate rat."
He smiled and Kira suppressed a shiver - the man freaked her out more than the wriggling animal she now held in her arms.
"I can come and help you settle him in," he said. "Perhaps that would help."
"It will be fine," Kira said. "I have a cage I used to keep rabbits in. I will make him a very comfortable bed."
Marion was grinning again.
"It is a good remedy to a rather difficult situation," she said.
Jasper frowned.
"It's a bitter remedy," he said. "Art is my friend. He has helped me through some difficult times. It will be difficult to sleep without him." He looked at Kira, his eyes pleading. "Are you sure there isn't room for me to stay as well? A sofa, a space on the floor, even."
Kira shook her head.
"Sorry," she said. "Nelly wouldn't allow it. She has issues with men." This was at least the truth. Kira's flat mate had escaped from an abusive family life right into an abusive relationship. She would not be comfortable sharing a flat with any man. Let alone, Jasper.
