"Have I seen her": a five minute freewrite

"Have I seen her?" I repeated, playing for time.

The policeman kept his eyes on mine, his expression neutral. But I was sure he suspected something. How on earth did he track her to me?

I thought I had been so careful.

"I think I might have seen her last week," I said finally. "At the market. By the vegetable stall," I added.

He nodded, and I could tell he knew that I was lying.

But he wasn't prepared to call me out on it, just yet.

"Thank you, sir," he said. "Very helpful." He handed me a card. "Could you call me?" he asked. "If you think of anything else?"

I nodded, accepting the card and pushing it into my back pocket.

"Of course," I said. "I hope she turns up soon. Such a lovely woman."

He paused and ran his eyes over my face for a moment.

"Indeed, sir. We are very worried. But we'll find her. You can be certain of that."

I smiled and showed him to the door. When he was safely on the other side I fell into the chair, my heart thumping hard.
