Moomins are a big thing in Finland, it’s what my generation grew up watching and those before us read the books and comics.
Arabia ceramics company created the first Moomin mug in 1990 and since then, they have produces hundreds of different ones, new ones coming out every year and season. Tove Jansson’s Moomin characters have a hold on us and you’d be hard pressed to find a household in Finland that doesn’t have at least one Moomin mug.
Those who are not in on the Moomin phenomena, will probably think these mugs are for kids, but oh no no, they are for everyone. I’m pretty sure the most avid collectors are middle aged women, with and without kids. The normal price now for a Moomin mug is 24,90€ but the special editions and rare older ones can go as high as 3000€ in an auction.
Somehow I had never owned a Moomin mug before yesterday, when my man surprised me with this one called Love. It’s a classic that has been in production since 1996. We might have had one or two mugs at homehome but I think mom knew there was no use in getting these because mugs would break all the time on the tile floor. My man has a few Moomin mugs, yes adult manly men who hunt and fish have Moomin mugs here in Finland, so there are several in our household now.
I think I might get a few Moomin mugs here and there so we can have a mug for everyone when we have guest over. I can’t stand mismatched cups!
