So i’m doing that thing that everyone outside of my own head generally hates, but i’m going to give you a brief rant about my dreams. When my Insomnia is at bay and I actually have a good nights sleep, I tend to have some very very intense dreams, and many of them have particularily consistent motifs and locales. Much of the time, the psychology behind recurring dreams is talked about as a nocturnal emission of day-time anxiety. Your teeth fall out as you’re about to give an important speech, you show up to an extremely important exam late and in full bondage gear(or is that just me??), you know, classic stuff. I certainly do have anxiety induced dreams, generally to do with having to do with reliving the rest of my days repeating high school in some hellish loop because my intellect is dubbed eternally unworthy, but the most interesting recurring dreams for me come in the way of locales that then become populated by totally unique events.
There are two notable ones that keep recurring, One is this kind of mini-mountain landscape that I have scaled so many times in my dreams but it always feels familiar when I am there. It’s general curvature and form seems etched into my consciousness, but every time I encounter it, I have to run through a totally different sequence of events leading up to it, of course these are typically long non-sequitured dream narratives consisting of a kaleidoscope of absurdity, but they always end up at this mountain, then I awake.
The other recurring locale I seem to inhabit is this kind of bar in a mountainous ski town, sometimes appearing at the base of said “mini-mountain” (NO IT’S NOT A HILL IT’S A MINI MOUNTAIN). It has some characteristics that remind me of a bar in my hometown, but it’s very Hogwarts-esque, and has a neon green sign in front of it. Which of course is always indecipherable. But the population of the bar is always different, I had a gathering with all of my childhood friends there this week, and also discovered that there’s a hot-tub in the back. This bar is clearly dope as fuck. It’s just so strange to see different narratives play out here over the years of my dreaming existence, but it always feels so welcoming at the time.
Obviously now I am running into the classic trope of how difficult it is to bridge the gap between how you personally perceive your own dreams and how other people perceive them, but what I really wonder is do other people have dream “locales” that seem populated by totally different events? This seems so interesting to me I’d love to hear more!
