It was a night like any other. Ismael's face appeared on my cell phone screen instantly. It didn't take me long to cheer up.

—How are you, baby? —he asked. I liked the fact that he always had time to take my calls. The connection turned out to be very bad tonight and made the picture a bit blurry and the sounds choppy.

I felt a tightening in my throat when I saw that behind him was his co-worker; they were now close friends. Seeing them there, in the room, working so close to each other ended up opening the box of my insecurities.

—Fine —I replied, biting my lip—. A little jealous. Ismael looked at me knowingly. Still, that didn’t calm me down.—I thought I was on mute —I whispered without much enthusiasm. Then, the girl behind him stopped flipping through the reports she held and gave me a warm smile.

Ismael shook his head. Suddenly, his expression showed tiredness. He took a posture that seemed to want to pierce through the phone screen’s glass. At that moment, the connection improved, and I could see the sincerity in his eyes.

—You don’t have to —he said—. You know you’re the only one.

But I was not entirely convinced by her words, and just then a boy of about seven appeared, her son, whom I already knew from other video calls. The boy was playing with a bubble jar. The bubbles he made floated in the air and made the adults next to him laugh. I seemed to be the one interrupting an evening of family harmony and that thought hurt me even more.

I felt so alone watching them from the other side.

«Has Ismael ever loved them?» I wondered, and I bumped into my reflection on the phone screen. My short hair whipped with the fan beside me, but my expression was so sad and dull I looked like a ghost.

—I’m jealous... —I whispered, but I think this time my voice was a bit louder than I would have liked. My heart skipped a beat. I tried to turn off the mic quickly, clumsily fumbling my fingers on the screen, but it had already come out of my mouth and everyone had heard my confession.

—Babe... —Ismael said with a tender and understanding expression.

—I thought I was on mute —I apologized, totally embarrassed—. Sorry, you know how distracted I am.

Our relationship kept stumbling. There were so many things I wanted to tell her, but not over the Internet or with people around her. It wasn't working, period.

—You don’t have to apologize —he murmured—. This is hard for both of us.

Again, bubbles appeared on the screen and disappeared. They became as distant to see as the beautiful presence of Ismael in my life. Then his coworker got up from the chair and left the room with her son after kindly saying goodbye to Ismael and me.

—Sometimes I dream that you’re here, by my side, and that everything goes back to how it was before —I confessed, unable to hide the sadness in my voice.

He nodded and lowered his gaze. I took a deep breath and tried to find his eyes through the screen. After a little while, Ismael was looking at me attentively, ready to hear all my complaints.

—Don’t make that face —he said, somewhat playfully—. I know you want to accuse me, but you don’t know what or how, right?

—I’m just jealous —I repeated, narrowing my eyes, because it was the only truth—. It hurts to see you with your coworker, even though I know you wouldn’t hurt me in any way; seeing you so close bothers me.

Then there was a long silence between us. Silence on a video call can sometimes be awkward, but this time it gave me room to calm all the negative thoughts flooding my mind.

—I want to be there with you. I can’t wait to come back... — he said shortly after.

—Maybe by the time you come back, I’ll have changed my mind and you won’t be the guy I like the most anymore — I whispered.

He smiled, the smile I love, and replied:

—I can always make you fall in love with me again. I know how to do it.

I laughed at her words. Our relationship was very complicated, but it was still beautiful, full of jealousy, tenderness and silences. Love can also grow on the other side of a screen, even if you can't touch the skin or feel the other's heart beating and even though the image may be distorted or the voices may not be heard, true love manages to grow stronger in the worst circumstances and environments.

—No pongas esa cara —me dijo, algo juguetón—.

—Siempre puedo volver a enamorarte.
