Alice was watching her fourteen-year-old son eating his breakfast with the assistance of his younger sister, Emily when she broke down in tears.
"Mum? Are you okay? What's wrong?" Oliver asked.
"Oh sweet, I am fine. I am just excited that today is your birthday." Alice said.
"It is going to be the best birthday of your life Oliver" Emily whispered
"No way! Mum? What are you planning to do? You know I hate surprises" Oliver said looking at his mischievous mother and sister.
Alice stood up and whispered in his ear, " trust me, it is going to be worth" With that she cleared all the dishes that were used for breakfast and prepared her children for school.
"I love you both!" Alice said when she took her kids to school. Quickly she rushed back home so she wouldn't miss the delivery man that was to deliver her son's EnChroma glasses which she ordered last month in preparation for his birthday. She was so happy that today her son will be able to see colors for the very first time.
On getting home, she saw the delivery man was at her pouch. Immediately she pulled over and rushed to him. Signing off on the delivery form, the delivery man handed a box containing Oliver's EnChroma glasses to her and left. Taking the box inside, she opened it up to make sure that what she ordered was what was brought to her. The joy that filled her heart was unspeakable that she threw air punches to express her joy.
A few hours into the day, Alice went to pick up her kids from school and took them to Oliver's favorite children's park. Getting there, Oliver asked, "Mum, are we celebrating my birthday here?"
"Yes my darling!"
"With lots of chocolate cupcakes?!" Oliver asked feeling excited already
"Yes, there will be lots of chocolate cupcakes for you birthday boy"
"Yay! Will, there be strawberry ice cream too" Emily asked.
Alice look at her two excited children and said, " You can have anything you want today" Then she led them both to the children playing court close to a ball pit. Getting there she told Oliver to close his eyes while she brought out the EnChroma glasses, she wore them for him and then told him to open his eyes slowly.
Opening his eyes slowly, Oliver gasped as he used both his hands to cover his mouth. It was a magical moment for him that shattered every colorless bad moment he has been through growing up. He looked up at his mum and said, "You have the most beautiful eyes and your hair is perfect". As he gestured for his Mum to come down to his height so he could touch her hair. Then he gestured for Emily to come closer and they all held each other as Oliver cried.
"Mum, can I stay here for while, alone, please, " Oliver asked
"Why not? Take all the time you need" Alice said as she walked Emily to the ice cream stand for some strawberry ice cream.
Oliver sat down beside the ball pit as he continued to bask in the glory of all the colors that were visible to him. Everyone and everything came to life for Oliver.
