Dublin has many beautiful parks but a great feature of the city is how close it is to the countryside. If you travel south you are in the Wicklow Mountains in no time, East and your in the plains of Kildare, or North to visit the Bru na Boinne Valley. Each has a different activity to offer.
Just a short distance south east of Dublin City is a small town called Enniskerry. There are many beautiful walks here and it is an ideal location for a day trip to escape to the countryside from Dublin.
This woodland lies in a valley straddling the boulder strewn Glencullen River. A wide diversity of plants and animals inhabit this small area.
It feels like you are a million miles from Dublin when your walking here. When we visited there were lots of people walking their dogs but it was such a peaceful place.
The walk around the woods took about an hour, there is a path that goes along one side of the river then returns at the other side. It's a loop and is quite easy going. No need to dress for hiking, but bring walking shoes or boots.
After a long walk we had worked up an appetite. On the drive back to Dublin, there are several places to stop for food. The famous Johnny Foxes is also in this area but we choose a new place to stop on this trip.
For an afternoon or half day trip take a round trip to the village of Enniskerry and a stop for a walk in the woods. Have dinner on your way back to Dublin.
Dublin - Enniskerry - Kilternan - Dublin
Dublin Enniskerry about 25 minutes by car, Enniskerry to Kilternan about 10 minutes by car, Kiternan back to Dublin about 15 minutes by car.
