No matter how shocking this may look, for me, the Christmas market is not an event I'm looking for with joy. Markets and fairs are my favorite, usually I make sure to visit as many as possible, but this one is more like a disappointment for me and I'll explain why.
The variety of interesting and useful products is mind blowing, you see so many goodies you can hardly choose, but don't worry as when you see the prices, your dilemma goes away in a split second. Two weeks ago I wrote a post about what is going to happen and Saturday, when the biker Santas came to collect the gifts for the less fortunate kids, I had the chance to see if I was right. Of course I was.
My primary goal was to hand over the gifts, take some photos for my post and enjoy the event. Buying anything was not planned, but I said to myself, it there will be something calling my name, I'll think about it.
This was the first trap, one very hard to resist as who doesn't want Christmas candies, candy canes and all kinds of chocolate? To give you an idea about the prices, you can buy similar Christmas candies 65% cheaper in the supermarket.
Gingerbread. For those of you, who are not familiar with Christmas in Europe, let me tell you, that there's no Christmas without gingerbread. Back in the day, when my maternal grandmother used to still spend Christmas with us. she used to bake small gingerbread figures and hang them on the tree. The tradition is going on I can say, but I don't hang them on the tree as we're eating them anyway. However, not this year as I'm continuing my diet and Christmas sweets, cookies and cakes will be limited. None for me I mean.
The gingerbread you see here is not just any gingerbread. The decoration on them equals any artwork. You buy one and literally have no heart to eat it, as it's so beautiful.
This was a stall that I would be willing to spend money. There weren't many to tell you the truth as prices were sky high, but seeing those beanies, hats (whatever you want to call them), sewn and crocheted toys, so many cool products made of canvas and organic materials ... makes you want to have them.
Another cool thing that I have to share with you is the kid with the Santa hat. He arrived on his bicycle, fully decorated for Christmas and had a Santa bag with him, full of goodies, that he donated to the kids from the orphanage. He is old enough to know how the whole Santa thing work and was willing to give away what he doesn't need anymore. How cool is that? At his age! I can appreciate parents who are teaching kids to do these things. Sorry to say but in this day of age, kids grow up being rather selfish. That's the sad truth.
Enamel cups and flasks, something I always look at and never buy any. If you don't use such items, then why buy them, right? But damn, they look so nice :)
This was the place where you could buy (almost) everything for the biggest event of the year, from different decorations to different oils, to make your house smell like Christmas.
If you were short on Christmas gift ideas, this lady could help you choose plenty, I'm sure of that.
Handmade jewellery and wall decorations.
Wooden toys and chopping boards, way better and healthier than plastic ones. The good thing about these markets is that you can find them at different events and if you don't buy something you like because you're hesitant, there's always the next one.
This is the place where I take the photo and leave as far away as possible, as fast as possible. It's lavender and I can't stand the smell.
Handmade jewellery, again. How often you give or receive jewellery for Christmas?
This was another place, where I would have spent some money. Those hand painted wooden items are lovely and the funny wooden globes are always a good idea as a gift, if you want to make someone smile or even laugh. These are durable as well, not to mention environment friendly.
No, it's not my lavender business, but it looks great :)
There's no Christmas without honey. I was looking to buy a jar of rapeseed honey, as that's my favorite, but as I'm on a diet, no honey for me :(
The lady had gingerbread as well and looking at the price, these were actually at a reasonable price. There's still time to go back and buy some, but what about my diet? That's the question.
