Hello, readers! I'm stopping by today to share my review of the book Until It Stops Hurting by Mar Petryk.

La historia gira en torno a Violeta Galeano, una enfermera aspirante a médica que en un operativo de rescate le salva la vida a Vincent Hamilton, un agente especial que estaba en una misión peligrosa y resultó gravemente herido. Pero, lejos de agradecerle esta nueva oportunidad, se enoja con ella porque lo único que ansía Vincent desde hace 2 años, cuando su vida se derrumbó, es morir. No solo deberá seguir viviendo, sino que le asignan a Violeta como su enfermera las 24 horas del día hasta que se recupere. En este ir y venir, con discusiones absurdas de por medio, Violeta se irá metiendo en su vida y haciéndose un hueco en el corazón de Vincent a codazos. Ahora es momento de tomar decisiones y elegir si continuar viviendo en el dolor del pasado o si intentarán dejar sus heridas atrás para empezar de nuevo.

The story revolves around Violeta Galeano, a nurse aspiring to become a doctor who, during a rescue operation, saves the life of Vincent Hamilton, a special agent who was on a dangerous mission and was seriously injured. But far from thanking her for this new chance at life, he gets angry with her because the only thing Vincent has longed for over the past two years—ever since his life fell apart—is to die. Not only must he continue living, but Violeta is assigned to be his nurse 24 hours a day until he recovers. Amid this back-and-forth, punctuated by absurd arguments, Violeta will gradually work her way into his life and elbow her way into Vincent’s heart. Now is the time to make decisions and choose whether to continue living in the pain of the past or to try to leave their wounds behind and start over.

Es una historia muy interesante y con su trasfondo dramático. Debo decir que esperaba algo mucho más trágico, si fue muy triste leer algunos fragmentos, pero voy a ser muy honesta y decir que desde la primera página Vincent mencionó que no quería vivir como 5 veces y un poco me canse de su actitud tan pesimista ante la vida. Entiendo que atravesó un dolor muy grande al perder a su esposa y su hija no nacida de la peor manera, pero eso no quita que no se haya comportado mal con el resto de sus seres queridos que se preocupan por él. Tampoco empatice con su actuar infantil y despreocupado en varios momentos.

It’s a very interesting story with a dramatic backdrop. I have to say I was expecting something much more tragic—it was very sad to read some parts—but I’m going to be completely honest and say that, starting on the very first page, Vincent mentioned about five times that he didn’t want to live, and I got a little tired of his pessimistic attitude toward life. I understand that he went through immense pain after losing his wife and unborn daughter in the worst possible way, but that doesn’t change the fact that he behaved poorly toward the rest of his loved ones who care about him. Nor did I empathize with his childish and carefree behavior at various points.

A la que sí amé es a Violeta, se me hizo un personaje femenino bastante fuerte a su manera, con mucha convicción y ganas de avanzar en la vida, a pesar de que tampoco tuvo una vida fácil. Se fue derecho a mi top 10 de personajes favoritos, amé su energía, su actitud y como se enfrentaba a Vincent. Era lo que él necesitaba, con tantas pelea e idas y vueltas, ella se fue ganando un lugar en su corazón marchito y un poco él en el suyo también. Al final adoré en lo que se convirtió este par para mejor.

The one I really loved was Violeta; she struck me as a pretty strong female character in her own way, with a lot of conviction and a desire to move forward in life, even though she didn’t have an easy life either. She went straight into my top 10 favorite characters—I loved her energy, her attitude, and the way she stood up to Vincent. She was just what he needed; through all their fights and ups and downs, she gradually won a place in his withered heart, and he won a little place in hers, too. In the end, I loved how this couple grew and changed for the better.

Me sorprendió que esperaba que el tono del libro fuera más doloroso y, aunque sí hubo partes bastantes fuertes, me encontré con escenas divertidas y más agradables de lo esperado. Eso me gustó, yo estaba lista para sufrir durante todo el libro, pero al final también me lleve reflexiones tremendas acerca del valor que nos damos a nosotros mismos y un montón de frases motivadoras. Esto sumo muchísimo.

I was surprised because I had expected the book to have a more painful tone, and although there were some pretty intense parts, I found scenes that were funny and more enjoyable than I expected. I liked that—I was ready to suffer my way through the whole book, but in the end, I also came away with some profound reflections on the value we place on ourselves and a ton of motivational quotes. That added so much.

Soy fiel creyente de que los libros llegan a nosotros cuando necesitamos leerlos y estoy segura que era el tipo de lectura que necesitaba ahora. Así que estoy feliz de haberlo leído, me sentí identificada con varias reflexiones que tuvo Violeta y me pareció una muy buena lectura. Quiero decir, a parte de la parte romántica y dramática, el libro también tiene escenas de acción y hace reír en otras ocasiones. Así que es el combo perfecto.

I firmly believe that books come into our lives when we need to read them, and I’m sure this was exactly the kind of book I needed right now. So I’m glad I read it; I could relate to several of Violeta’s reflections, and I thought it was a really good read. I mean, aside from the romantic and dramatic parts, the book also has action scenes and makes you laugh at other times. So it’s the perfect combination.

Me olvidé de contarles que esta historia está narrada desde los dos puntos de vista, el de Violeta y Vincent, y esto hace mucho más fácil conocer sus dos caras y empatizar con ellos y su dolor. En un momento se me hizo mucho más interesante y emotiva la historia de vida de Violeta. Con ella si derrame un par de lágrimas, y luego algunas en conjunto con ellos dos. Pero eso más hacia el final, cuando Vincent se permitió sanar por completo.

I forgot to mention that this story is told from both perspectives—Violeta’s and Vincent’s—and this makes it much easier to understand both sides of the story and empathize with them and their pain. At one point, I found Violeta’s life story much more interesting and moving. I did shed a couple of tears for her, and then a few more for both of them together. But that was more toward the end, when Vincent allowed himself to heal completely.

Es una hermosa historia de superación y de segundas oportunidades. De seguir adelante y de sanar. Seguro que los va a hacer reflexionar en algunos puntos, así que recomiendo mucho esta lectura.

It's a beautiful story about overcoming adversity and second chances—about moving forward and healing. It's sure to give you pause for thought at times, so I highly recommend this book.
