Hello, internet folk – how are you all? Today I want to talk to you about one of my favourite Stephen King books: *Misery*. It tells the story of Paul Sheldon, a famous writer who, following a serious accident, falls into the hands of his ‘biggest fan’, who kidnaps him and forces him to write a new version of her favourite book by the author, with the ending she wants. During his terrifying ordeal, Paul is subjected to various forms of physical and psychological torture whilst trying to escape from the woman.

Hoy quiero hablarles sobre uno de mis libros preferidos de Stephen King, se trata de "Misery" el cual cuenta la historia de Paul Sheldon, un famoso escritor que tras un grave accidente cae en manos de su "mayor admiradora" la cuál lo secuestra y somete para que escriba una nueva versión de su libro preferido del autor con el final que ella quiere. Durante su estadía de terror, Paul experimentara diversas torturas fisicas y psicológicas mientras intenta escapar de la mujer
I have to say that I really like both the book and the film; however, the differences between the two are striking and affect the plot in their own way. Despite this, I think both are really good; even the author himself loved the adaptation.
Tengo que decir que tanto el libro como la pelíucla me gustan mucho, sin embargo, las diferencias entre uno y otra son notales y afectan a la trama a su modo y pese a esto, creo que ambs resultados son realmente buenos, incluso el propio autor amó la adaptación
Looking at Annie, she is a truly terrifying antagonist right from the very first minute; her farm is a house of horror, extremely filthy, reflecting her mental decline. She exhibits certain behaviours, such as entering a catatonic state for long periods, and she is also domineering, reacting with extreme violence when Paul does not do as she asks. Her level of violence escalates over time.
Analizando a Annie, es una antagoista tremendamente aterradora desde el minuto 1, su granja es un hogar del terror, extremadamente sucia, reflejo de su deterioro mental, tiene ciertos comportamientos como el de quedarse en estado catatónico por largo rato y además es dominante y reacciona con extrema violencia cuando Paul no hace lo que ella le pide. Su nivel de violencia va incrementando con el tiempo
The book describes her and her surroundings as extremely filthy; it says she stinks and is far from pleasant to look at. Furthermore, I noticed that she had developed a dependency on medication, so although Paul rejects her for the reasons mentioned above and because she is clearly insane, he also feels dependent on Annie, as she is the one who supplies him with the painkillers that help alleviate the excruciating pain in his broken legs, In fact, one of the first exchanges between the two reveals her sadistic nature: when it is time for the painkiller, she drags out the conversation whilst rolling the two tablets from one hand to the other, under Paul’s desperate gaze as he simply wants the pain to stop. She does this to amuse herself with his reaction, to make Paul do as she wishes, to have him yield to her whims, and to further entrench his dependence on her.
El libro la describe a ella y a su entorno como extremadamente sucio, dice que ella apesta y tiene una apariencia para nada agradable, además, noté que le generó dependencia a los farmacos por lo que Paul aunque la rechaza por lo antes mencionado y por que claramente está demente también siente una dependencia a Annie debido a que es la que le suministra los analgésicos que le ayudan a mitigar el horrible dolor de sus piernas fracturadas, de hecho, una de los primeros dialogos entre estos dos nos muestra su naturaleza sádica, cuando llega la hora del analgésico y ella alarga la conversación mientras pasea el par de pildoras de una mano a la otra ante la mirada desesperada de Paul que solo quiere que pare el dolor esto con el propósito de divertirse con su reacción, lograr que Paul haga lo que ella quiera, sediendo a sus caprichos y afianzar más la dependencia de Paul
From the very first moment, Paul realises that Annie is far from normal, and the fact that she says she doesn’t get on with her nearest neighbours really sets off alarm bells for him: she isn’t married, she runs a farm but has no staff, and she lives kilometres away from the nearest village. All of this makes Paul realise he’s in a tricky situation. Thanks to his wits, Paul manages to escape, though not unscathed, and all the events that took place at that ‘Farm of Horror’ leave the protagonist with physical and psychological scars.
Paul nota desde el segundo uno que Annie está muy lejos de ser normal y de hecho que diga que no le agrada a sus vecinos más próximos le hacesaltar las alarmas, la mujer no está casada, tiene una granja pero no tiene empleados y está a kilometros del pueblomás cercano. Todo hace que Paul entienda que está en una situación delicada. Gracias a su ingenio, Paul logra escapar pero no ileso y todos los acontecimiento ocurridos en esa Granja del Horror dejan secuelas físicas y psicológicas en el protagonista
The book is told from Paul’s point of view, so we get to know Annie alongside him; we feel his frustration, pain, confusion and fear just as he does, and Stephen King’s exquisite narrative helps to build the terror around this; there’s no need for a supernatural monster or any cheap scares; King manages to terrify the reader with the breakdown of the human psyche – something more real, closer to home and more tangible, and therefore a situation that could happen to anyone and which, in fact, has happened.
El libro está desde el punto de vista Paul asi que vamos conociendo a Annie junto con el, sentimos su frustración, dolor, confución y miedo como él y la narrativa exquicita de Stephen King ayuda a que el terror se genere en base a ella, no hace falta un monstruo sobrenatural o algun susto barato, King consigue aterrorizar al lector con el declive de la psique humana, algo más real, más cercano y más tangible, por tanto asimismo una situaión que podría pasarle a cualquiera y que de hecho ha pasado
The book also highlights the dangers of obsession and unhealthy fanaticism (a phenomenon common in South Korea, for example, with the so-called ‘Sassaengs’) – that fine line between normal admiration and the belief that the person one admires is ‘theirs’. As a curious aside, I learnt that Stephen King wanted to draw a parallel between his drug addiction at that time and Annie; Paul knows that Annie is harmful and a horrible person, but on the other hand she is the one who supplies him with the painkillers that stop his pain and give him hours of peace; although he knows that Annie will ultimately destroy him in the long run, he prefers, in a way, to ignore this fact in order to obtain his momentary relief – just as drugs work for many people, including King himself.
El libro también refleja los peligros de la obseción, del fanatismo malsano (un fenómeno popular en por ejemplo Corea del Sur con las denominadas Sassaengs) esa brecha delgada entre la admiración normal y la creencia de creer a la persona admirada "suya" además como dato curioso, supe que Stephen King quiso hacer un paralelismo a su adicción a las drogas de esa época con Annie, Paul sabe que Annie es dañina y una persona horrible pero por otro lado es quien le suministra los analgésicos que paran su dolor y le dan horas de tranquilidad, aunque sabe que Annie terminará acabandolo a largo plazo, prefiere de cierta manera ignorar este hecho con tal de obtener su alivio momentaneo, de la misma forma que funcionan las drogas para muchas personas, incluido el propio King
