Today I want to talk to you about a series—a trilogy—that I had at home for some time without realizing what a gem I possessed: Victor Hugo’s *Les Misérables*. The story begins when a man, Jean Valjean, is sentenced to nineteen years in prison simply for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister and her children. He endures great hardship in prison, but things become even worse once he regains his freedom; former convicts were so heavily stigmatized that they were denied both shelter and work. This cruel irony of life forced him to turn to crime once again—this time targeting Monseigneur Bienvenue, who, remarkably, offers him a second chance—an opportunity Valjean manages to put to good use. Later, we learn the story of Fantine, a young woman who, following a heartbreak, is forced to leave her daughter in the "care" of a family—the infamous Thénardiers—who only seek to exploit her. Fantine sacrifices her life and health, working tirelessly to provide the best for her daughter, while that wretched family merely takes advantage of the money. At a certain point, the lives of Fantine and Valjean become intertwined through Cosette (Fantine’s daughter).
Hoy les quiero hablar de una serie, una trilogía que yo tuve en casa por un tiempo sin darme cuenta de la joya que tenía, se trata de Los Miserables de Victor Hugo. Todo inicia cuando un hombre , Jean Valjean, es condenado a diecinueve años de prisión tan solo por robar una hogaza de pan para alimentar a su hermana y sobrinos, en la cárcel pasa penurias pero todo se vuelve incluso peor cuando consigue su libertad pues, los ex presidiarios eran estigmatizados y por lo tanto no les daban ni asilo ni trabajo, esta ironía de la vida lo obligó a delinquir nuevamente, esta vez atacando a Monseñor Bienvenue quién no obstante leda una oportunidad que Valjean sabe aprovechar bien. Posteriormente conocemos la historia de Fantine, una jovencita que tras una decepción amorosa se ve forzada a dejar a su hija al “cuidado” de una familia, los infames Thénardier, quienes solo se aprovecharon de ella. Fantine dejó su vida y su salud trabajando para darle a su hija lo mejor, mientras esa infame familia solo se aprovechaban del dinero. En algún punto las vidas de Fantine y Valjean se entrelazan de alguna manera a través de Cosette, (la hija de Fantine)
At its core, the story centers on the clash between human laws—which often were, and frequently remain, dehumanizing and unjust—and moral grace. Like many others, Valjean fell victim to an unjust system that not only compounded the hardships faced by the less fortunate—amidst profound social inequality—but also wielded disproportionate power over minor offenses, eroding the human psyche and causing moral destruction. Yet, the true devastation stems from societal rejection, public scorn, and a lack of opportunity fueled by prejudice—conditions that drive individuals into destitution. But what happens when a window of hope—a light amidst the darkness—is opened? Valjean experienced this through Monseigneur Bienvenu, who saw in him neither a criminal nor an ex-convict, but rather a tormented soul—a man, a brother in need—and it was precisely this that made all the difference.
Realmente el epicentro de la historia es el choque entre las leyes humanas que a menudo eran y muchas veces lo siguen siendo, deshumanizantes e injustas, y la gracia moral. Valjean, al igual que muchos otros seres fue víctima de un sistema injusto que, no solo hacía las cosas más difíciles para los menos favorecidos (mucha desigualdad social) sino que además ejercía un poder desproporcionado para un delito menor, socavando la psique de las personas, destruyéndolos moralmente, pero la verdadera destrucción viene con el rechazo de la sociedad, el escarnio y la falta de oportunidades basadas en el prejuicio, esto conduce al ser humano a caer en la miseria, ¿pero que sucede cuando se le abre una ventana de esperanza, una luz en medio de la oscuridad? Valjean lo experimentó con Monseñor Bienvenue, quién no vio en él al delincuente ni al ex presidiario, sino a un alma atormentada, a un hombre, a un hermano que necesitaba de é, y fue precisamente esto lo que marcó la diferencial.
Women were not spared from this injustice, and Fantine is the prime example of this. One line that truly touched my soul was when she mentions how she clothed and fed her daughter by selling parts of her own body—her hair, her teeth, and eventually even by offering intimate favors—all because of societal judgments that prevented a single mother from holding a decent job in a factory. This goes to show that it is society itself, with its judgments and its absurd, disproportionate rules, that is the true root of the problem.
Las mujeres no se salvaban de esa injusticia y Fantine es la mayor prueba de ello. Una de las frases que me llegó al alma fue una en la que ella hace alusión a vistió y alimentó a su hija vendiendo partes de su cuerpo (cabello, dientes y finalmente incluso ofreciendo favores de índole íntima) todo por causa de los juicios que no permitían que una madre soltera tuviese un trabajo digno en una fábrica. Entonces esto demuestra que es la misma sociedad con sus juicios y reglas absurdas y desproporcionadas la raíz real del problema.
All of this culminated in a major social upheaval following the fall of Napoleon and the bourgeois and republican revolts of 1832; the French people had grown weary of the restored monarchies and the devastating economic crises that followed the profligate spending of the elite—spending that came at the expense of those who struggled every day just to put a bit of bread on their families' tables.
Todo esto derivó en un gran estallido social tras la caída de Napoleón y las revueltas burguesas y republicanas de 1832, pues el pueblo francés ya estaba cansado de las monarquías restauradas y las crisis económicas devastadoras que llegaban luego del derroche de los que estaban en la elite, en detrimento de aquellos que luchaban cada día para siquiera poner un poco de pan sobre la mesa de su familia.
