An at least 30 year old pure-veg establishment located snugly in the city, Karthik is the breakfast option for several Mangaloreans. An ease of parking, airy insides, & yester-year charm endear it to not just the old-timers, but all who crave a fuss-free Tindi-kaapi.

Here's what we had:

Rimjhim Coffee & Kalladka Tea:

Yes, we know! Many of you prefer these grandparents of Dalgona from THE original Laxmi Nivas, Kalladka, but to those who can’t be bothered for convenience to journey 30 km away from the city of Mangalore, this place offers acceptable fare, the star in our eyes being the Rimjhim coffee. It’s not that the decoction layered medium-sweet tea is bad, & it isn’t (Could use some spices, though? Just a suggestion?). However, the strong flavour & sharp aroma of the coffee, that stays on the safer side of Sakkre (As we prefer it, if you want more sugar, JUST ADD it yourself) reeled us in harder. There’s very little Je-ne-sais-quoi about caffeine, but when it promises to optimally start ones day, you appreciate the cuppa’ Kaapi all the more.

Food: 8.4/10(RC), 7.5/10(KT)

Price: ₹25/

Golibaje:

Crisp, spongy, fragrant from coconut oil & a teensy bit chewy. That’s how we prefer ‘em. And yes, Baking Soda is a deal-breaker. THESE just about meet those caveats, while also having the customary chopped green chillies & cumin. Are Golibaje the ONE fried snack that can be savoured even when cold? Judge for yourself.

Food: 8/10

Price: ₹25/plate

Parnd’da podi:

Udupi to Trivandrum, sweet banana fritters are a staple with tea. Warmer than the Golibaje, but a tad less satisfactory in that the Banana sliced, wasn’t sweet enough. The jeera infused Besan coating was yet crisp, though. Munch on.

Price: ₹27
