They built giants out of sand to guard their castles on the shore. Together they advanced to lay claim to dominion.
With every step they took she pulled herself away, but when she returned, her wave crashed down, pushing under their feet and washing over their heads.
She didn't stop there. She moved past the darkened shoreline toward their tiny kingdom, flooding their sand halls and washing their monsters away.
Sputtering, they crawled to safety as she pulled away again.
They stretched their young bodies out on the golden white beach and let the sun dry their backs until all that remained on their skin was the salt.
Their sandcastle ruins were forgotten as they gazed at her in awe.
