Vanessa was broken, shattered, fragmented, and in all the other words describing heartbreak. She had loved Michael like her little life depended on it and she had thought, he loved her back, but no, she was so very wrong. Michael never loved her or he wouldn't have walked back into the arms of his ex, two years into their relationship, without ever looking back. He used her, yes, and with this realization, came crashing a fresh wave of pain, through her entire being. She meant nothing to him, she was nothing and could never be.
She couldn't concentrate on her work and her once vibrant creativity dimmed as she struggled to find solace in all the chaotic happenings in her life. She struggled with this day after day and her work suffered in the process.
Her boss, Mr Everton, who had been watching her closely, summoned her into his office one morning. She would be fired, she had asked for it. Mr Everton was a no nonsense man with a very stern demeanor, though very well polished, he had eyes like dark stormy skies and yes, he was always a storm brewing, feared by everyone, some referred to him as the 'devil himself'.
So it was with trepidation that Vanessa walked into his office that morning, she stood by his desk like a timid little girl, , eyes downcast, twiddling her fingers, awaiting a reprimand and a termination of her appointment.
Then she felt a light touch on her shoulders as he turned her around to face him. She looked up into his eyes, they were calm and kind, unbelievably understanding. Then the dam broke, she wept uncontrollably, pouring out her heart in muffled words. Her boss consoled her, listening to her outpouring, not with empty platitude but with an intensity that seemed to absorb her pain.
He held her in his arms, soothing her with his gentle words, softened by her pain. shocked at his reaction, he smiled wryly.
"Was he turning into a sympathetic devil, becoming human again by the cry of a Damsel in distress?" He muttered as he held her closer still.
