Augsburger Zeughausplatz
I was at Zeughausplatz in Augsburg this week to take photos for the Wednesday Walk.
The square gets its name from the building Zeughaus, which is right there.
It was built in 1602 by Elias Holl and served as accommodation for soldiers and weapons. In 1893, the fire brigade moved in and today it serves as an educational and seminar centre.
It is one of the few 17th-century houses to have survived the night of bombing in Augsburg, February 1944, unscathed.
Shortly after the World War, the Horten department stores' wanted to fundamentally change this building, which was fortunately prevented by some committed Augsburg citizens.
Right next door is a beer garden with a restaurant. Since this square is right in the centre, it is a destination for many tourists and also Augsburgers.
There is even a Christmas market there in December.
But of course there was nothing of that this week.
There is also a small playground for children. I myself find it a bit out of place, but I don't have any children. So I can't really judge whether it's any good.
The square has a direct connection to Maximilianstrasse, where the main life in Augsburg takes place.
It was only a short walk, but well worth seeing.
See you next Wednesday Walk. Let's see where I show up then.
