The greatest trick a Devil could do would be to convince you that it was the good guy. Consider the following few rambling additions to this thought.

Why do we refer to life on this planet as carbon based?

How does that carbon become life and build plants, animals, insects, etc.?

What if two important things to that process are Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Oxygen?

What if eating other life forms begins to be viewed as bad?

What if the answer is to only eat plant life?

What if the push becomes to remove carbon from the atmosphere and CO2 is often the thing most talked about?

What happens to plant life as CO2 levels plummet?

What happens to those against eating meat when there are no plants?

What do plants do for us besides provide food?

How does non-plant life exist without Oxygen?

Wouldn't removing CO2 lead to a catastrophic end to carbon based organic life?

What if the Carbon Dioxide levels are actually near the lowest they have been in the history of the Earth?

What do you an other non-plant life forms exhale (breathe out)? (answer: CO2)

If they tax you for carbon wouldn't that be taxing you for life?

Whom are you paying that to?

Why do they have that authority?

With those taxes are they building themselves domed or underground greenhouses full of CO2 and Oxygen while the rest of us die off?

What better trick of a Devil than to convince a population to pay to die?

If you are now an atheist do you perchance treat certain other humans as the infallible priests you listen to?

Are you truly atheist or have you simply chosen certain agencies as those you worship without question?

How often do you hold a mirror up to your mind?

Do you think you are going to get a robotic body?

Perhaps if you have a robotic body you think CO2 won't matter. Oxygen at low levels might be good to you as it would reduce oxidation.

What if that robotic body is nowhere close and it is just part of the con for your suicide?

Most of that is questions. Why? I suspect the answers to those questions could be profoundly important. Yet I think you need to find out the answers to them yourself. If you do that then it will form in your mind, based upon your research, and would thus not be something you could push aside as someone you don't trust, that you ridicule, or that you think is the bad guy/gal.

If you just go to your usual source and expect them to provide you the answers you'll miss the opportunity to think for yourself.

If I tell you my thoughts and push those answers that I have on you then I can't really claim to be doing anything other than the priest, the politician, the salesman, or in some cases the so-called scientist. (You have to be able to ask questions of anything as part of the Scientific Method so if a so-called scientist is making it banned to question certain things they are no scientist regardless of what any piece of paper says.)
