GODFATHERISM IN NIGERIAN POLITICS

Godfatherism is a common practice in Nigerian politics. It refers to a situation where a powerful and wealthy person supports a politician to gain political power, usually in exchange for loyalty, money, or other benefits. Such a powerful person is known as a political godfather, while the politician receiving the support is called the godson. Although godfatherism can sometimes help politicians win elections, it has become a serious problem in Nigeria because of its negative effects on democracy and good governance.

One of the major causes of godfatherism in Nigeria is the high cost of contesting elections. Many politicians need financial support to pay for campaigns, advertisements, rallies, and other political activities. As a result, they depend on wealthy individuals who provide the necessary funds. Unfortunately, some of these wealthy individuals expect the politicians they support to obey their instructions after winning elections.

Another cause of godfatherism is corruption. Some political godfathers support candidates not because they have the interest of the people at heart, but because they want to control government activities and benefit from public funds. They may influence the selection of political candidates, the appointment of government officials, and the award of government contracts.

Godfatherism has several negative effects on Nigerian society. First, it encourages corruption because politicians may misuse public resources to repay their godfathers. Instead of using government money to provide good roads, hospitals, schools, and electricity, some politicians use their positions to satisfy the selfish interests of their sponsors.

Second, godfatherism weakens democracy. In a democratic society, citizens should have the freedom to elect leaders who will represent their interests. However, when powerful individuals determine who becomes a political leader, the wishes of ordinary citizens may be ignored. This makes elections less meaningful and reduces public confidence in the electoral system.

Furthermore, godfatherism can lead to political violence. When political godfathers disagree with their godsons or compete with other powerful individuals, their supporters may engage in threats, intimidation, and violence. Such conflicts can disturb peace and prevent development in the affected communities.

In addition, godfatherism can prevent qualified and honest people from participating in politics. Young people and individuals without wealthy sponsors may find it difficult to contest elections, even when they have good ideas and the ability to lead.

However, godfatherism can be reduced through several measures. The government should strengthen electoral laws and ensure that elections are free, fair, and credible. Political parties should adopt transparent methods of selecting candidates. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should also ensure that electoral rules are properly enforced. Furthermore, citizens should reject politicians who use money, threats, and violence to gain political power.

In conclusion, godfatherism is one of the major challenges facing Nigerian democracy. Although financial support can help politicians during elections, it becomes harmful when it allows powerful individuals to control elected leaders. Therefore, Nigerians must support leaders who are accountable to the people rather than to wealthy political sponsors. This will promote democracy, reduce corruption, and encourage national development.
