Here is a concept that I totally did not unconsciously rip off from "The Subtle Knife" aka the concept of opening and closing windows between parallel worlds. In hindsight, I think the Golden Compass series was probably my first narrative exposure to the concept of parallel worlds and travel between them. I read that series when I was in middle school and it really had an impact on me. The world was so strange, the fact that it technically existed alongside our world blew my mind - and it posed truly existential questions to my very young mind. I always talk about Dune and The Sandman as formative pieces of fiction in my life, but I have to give a lot of credit to The Golden Compass for being some of the first compost on the garden of my mind.
It's kinda fun for me to look at my work today and then suddenly realize what I've been writing is linked to something I haven't thought about for years.
