THE GAME

She sees me
there is no mistaking that
her words never reach my ears
yet I listen

Her perfume is odourless
from such a distance
and her eyes
never meet my own
but I know she sees me

I want to listen to what others say
but to do that would bring
anticipation and lead
to disappointment

I would rather prevent pain
by expecting it in the first place
and try not to celebrate until
the last snowflake
has fallen on my tongue

Why don't I build the bridge?
for the next step may be building a life
knowing gives air to deflating lungs
and starts the heart beating again

I cannot let pride
stand in the way
of possible happiness
but life
is
cruel

I wonder what stops her?
Her actions alone would discourage me
had not the seed been planted in my mind
that suggested otherwise

That glimmer of hope
is too bright
I want to believe
what I was told
not what I see

But does that make me
weak
hopeful
or in
love?

The game is played
and is never won

Pride shadows happiness
like an eclipse
swallowing the sun
engulfing in its path
what the future holds
for the two
who fear
to speak their mind
