I've been trading in Refurbished Computer Equipment for over Twenty years now, and while it never ceases to amaze me, it still annoys me the antics of people looking to buy say a Laptop from me. There are generally three types of customers the Champaigne tastes Lemonade pockets types, the Cheap as Chips types and the I need it, you've got it types.
Champainge tastes Lemonade pockets
These folks, in reality, want a brand new piece of equipment but they can't afford it so they'll ask how old it is? Do I know where it came from? What was it used for? Questions it will be impossible even for my supplier to answer.
Cheap as Chips
These types are similar to the Lemonade brigade although to be fair to them, they understand the concept of "You get what you pay for." so they generally try a different tack:
- "Ooh, that's a bit pricey?"
- "If I come and collect it will you knock the delivery off?"
- "What discount can you give me?"
- "What's the price if I buy two?"
I need it, you've got it
These are my favourites. They'll ring or email, usually, they'll have picked their choice off my stock list and after a couple of pleasantries they'll order and the only question they'll ask is: "When can I have it, Pete?" I don't think any of my top customers have ever asked for a quantity discount either?
Me: "These are really nice units Lenovo X1 Carbon 5th i5-6300U/8GB/256GB-SSD/14"/W10P/
Customer: "How old are these machines?"
Me: "About two years old.
Customer: "Would all of the licences etc be transferred?"
Me: "If you have them and the associated software.
Customer: "If you set it up remotely that would be cheaper surely?"
Me: "That installation price is based on 'remote'.
Customer: "Oh! Really?"
It kind of goes on in the same vein for a while. Eventually, and dare I say, finally, he authorises the supply. What's frustrating is his current laptop is dead, he has nothing to work with and so needs a replacement. The interesting thing is this enquiry was spread over three days and yet what did he say after dragging his feet for three days? "How quickly can I have it?" 馃う鈥嶁檪
